There are more pictures in my Summer Palace Travelogue on my Beijing page. The Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) was first built in 1750, largely destroyed during the war of 1860, and then rebuilt in 1886. Destroyed again in 1900, it was restored to the scale and design that it is today two years later. It was originally known as the Garden of Clear Ripples. Shanghai

by seagoingJLW

In the early days, Shanghai was a fishing village. It graduallydeveloped into a trading port by the 13th century and became China's largest textile center in the 16th century. After the Opium War in 1840, Shanghai was forced open as a 'treaty port' by the colonialists. Shanghai is one of the three municipalities under the direct jurisdiction of the central government. Stroll along the Bund in Shanghai. Here are some of the Bund's foreign built buildings.

Visit the Jade Buddha Temple in Shanghai. There is another travelogue on this.In 1882 the monk Huigen brought 5 jade buddha statues from Burma. He left 2 of them in Shanghai building a temple there to keep them. In 1918 the old temple burned and the present one was built. The temple consists of three main halls and two courtyards. The first hall is Tianwand Dian Hall, the second is Daxiong Baodian, and the third is the Jade Buddha Tower. The white jade buddha, which was brought from Burma, is two meters high and encrusted with jewels weighing in at 1,000 kg.The temple is closed from noon until 1 pm.

by seagoingJLW

Nanjing is one of the four well known ancient capitals in China. It is also known as the 'Metropolis of Ten Dynasties'--the East Wu, East Jin, Song, Qi, Liang Chen, the Southern Tang, the Early Ming, the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and the Provisional Government of the Republic. It is situated on the lower reaches of the Yangtse River. The main attractions in the area are Dr. Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (pictured here), Sun Yat-sen's Memorial Hall, the Mei Ling Place, the Plum Blossom Hill, Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang's Tomb of the Ming Dynasty, Xu Da's Tomb, Li Wenzhong's Tomb, the Linggu Temple, Liao Zhongkai's Tomb, Tan Yankai's Tomb, the Zhongshan Botanical Gardens, and the Purple Mountain Observatory.

Qingdao

by seagoingJLW

Qingdao began life as a fishing village and trading port. It was also a favorite spot for pirate raids until it was fortified during the Ming Dynasty. Germans seized the village in 1897 in retaliation for the murder of two missionaries. They built a naval base and trading port here. That explains the beer. Do visit the Tsingtao Beer Factory. If you have a chance, visit Little Fish Mountain Park in Xingdao. Notice the different spellings-- the old for the beer factory, the new for the others.

Great Wall

by seagoingJLW

Do not forget to visit the Great Wall of China near Beijing. Unfortunately when we were there it was wall-to-wall people and we didn't get any good photos while walking on the wall.Construction of the wall started in the 7th century B.C. The vassal states under the Zhou Dynasty had each built their own walls. In 221 B.C., after the state of Qin unified China, the walls were joined to hold off invaders and were extended to 10,000 li (5,000km.) In 1368 the Ming Dynasty undertook a renovation of the wall which took 200 years to complete. It became a World Heritage Site in 1987.
