Monks Debating !!???!!

by into-thin-air

Whilst visiting one of the Monasteries just outside of Lhasa I heard this incredible noise !!?? Shouting and Clapping and even more Shouting !!?? I thought surely the Monk's can't be fighting amongst themselves ?? so off I went to investigate and what I encountered was my Fondest Memory of Tibet !!The Monks were Debating, Buddhism isn't written in stone like many other religions so the Monks Debate it amongst themselves, when a Monk is delivering his point of view he will jump into the air and clap -- if the hands come together palms together then he wishes you to agree the point but if he turns one hand so that the palm of one hand hits the back of the other then he doesn't agree with this particular point !! This really is the Most Amazing sight and I consider myself Incredibly lucky in been able to witness it !!!!

Prayer on the Tibet road

by DANYUN

We met this old man with all the dust in the front head on the Qing-Tibet way, he planed to kneel down all his way from Naqu to Lhasa. That day is the 11th days after he set off. I really can't image how loyal he is to his own belief.

Patience

by Sharrie

Highways are continually constructed connecting Lhasa & Xigaze (2nd largest city in Tibet) which slows traffic down a great deal. Travelers need to be patient & exercise caution. In addition, it's extremely dusty... something which I hadn't expected. Who'd have thought the roof of the world is polluted as well?!

Tibetan Homes

by Sharrie

These solid looking houses are an improvement over those mud-houses earlier. Using the traditional method of stones & mud bricks, the houses are built with very small windows, the only method of giving the occupants protection from the cold.

Living Quarters

by Sharrie

Treeless landscapes are often observed outside the cities & even the walls of the houses, made from dried mud, are the same color as the surroundings. Not a fascinating sight, but there are many Tibetans who still live in such housing today.

Desert

by Sharrie

Well, besides the rivers, mountains & snow, desert & sand dunes are also present in this area. To have a pleasant experience traveling through Tibet, one should be well prepared in terms of clothing & patience. Weather changes quickly & at times, roads are difficult to navigate due to landslides.

Nomads

by Sharrie

XIZANG in Chinese, the Tibetan plateau is 1600 miles long & 800 miles across. It is part of the People's Republic of China & covers an area of 471,700 sq. miles. Comprising of dry & arid land, it consists of huge span of inhospitable terrain but is an area rich in historical & cultural past. Observing nomad's life.Although bless with exceeding lovely environs, nomads have to endure equally cold landscapes.

tips from my experience

by oceanier

My trip was short but amazing. I visited Lhasa (Potala palace is in it), Yandrok Lake, Xigaze, Mt Everest (base camp), Namco lake. I actually take a tour with agency. after arrival, a guide will meet you. i have a 6 people group plus 1 guide, 2 drivers ( 2 jeeps) . if any changes, you can deal with the guide, talk to him/her for change plan, it works well. you have your money back (cash) if you decide not to go to a place in the plan. the price is acutally cheaper for jeeps rental with tour agents than that with your own to negotiate with the rental company. and the guide really helps everything. the roudn trip airticket to Lhasa from guangzhou (near hongkong) is about $500. and then for everything else is less than $500 in a 8 day trip (we lived in 3-star hotels for 6 nights, one night in a simple motel, one night in tent). In this case, you have better group you people and go, then you...

On top of the world!

by Sharrie

On the way to Lhasa, the plane flew ever soooo closely to the snow capped mountains, so close that I could almost touched the peaks! Never have I seen so many mountain peaks at an altitude of over 7000 meters concentrated in a single location! Yes, Tibet has numerous of them! It was quite an exhilarating experience even if I only got to see it from the inside of the plane.

In Lhasa, the Potala Palace is...

by Beefy_SAFC

In Lhasa, the Potala Palace is the most spectacular site of the lot (see photo). But for character, head for the Jokhang Temple to see the devote protrating themselves in prayer. Don't forget the big monasteries at Drepung, Sera and Ganden, or the Norbu Lingka, the Dalai Lama's summer palace (which he preferred). Lhasa night market is one thing alot of people miss - great way of meeting the Moslem population of Lhasa. As for the rest, Yam Drok Tso lake, Gyantse (Kumbum Stupa and Fortress), Shigatse (Tashilhunpo Monastery) and the vies from the high passes are totally unforgetable. See http://www.tibet.freeserve.co.uk for photos and more info. *** I have also been to Beijing, Xi'an and Chengde in China proper. To see details of this trip, see http://www.geocitie .com/beefnetuk/travels/china.html The funnies are top of my list, so here goes... Stayed in run down hotel in Zhang Mu, last...
