Pack light! I suggest that you don't bring your best luggage and bags. Take a bag that can withstand dusty conditions.

Bring long sleeve light cotton shirts, polarized sunglasses, and a hat

Sunscreen and a box of Kleenex tissues

Bring extra batteries for your digital camera and enough disk memory for 1000 photos.

One thing I did not use was mosquito repellent.

Of the above items, a hat can be purchased cheaply in Lhasa. The rest should be bought elsewhere before arrival in Tibet. You can find cowboy hats with the Chicago Bulls logo for as low as 40 yuan (US $5) as well as simple caps for 10 yuan ($US 1.50) at department stores and small shops throughout Lhasa.

You might want to bring instant noodles if you will be taking the train from Lhasa to Golmud or beyond. The selection of instant noodles in Lhasa stores is rather limited.

VIDEOCAM: A MUST WHEN GOING TO SERA MONASTERY

make sure you bring a videocam (or at least a digicam with decent video capability) when you go to sera monastery.

why? if you go to the debating courtyard at 3 in the afternoon (pls see my 'sera: best time to visit' things to do tip for more info), you'll get a chance to witness the whole congregation of sera monks feverishly debating with one another (more like screaming at one another, actually).

pictures just won't be enough to capture this intiguing spectacle and no manner of explanation to your friends back home will ever do it justice.

    catch it on video!

Layered clothing since the day & night temperature differs quite a great deal. Also, at certain time of the year, esp. during season changes, most hotels do not have their heater on! So, thermal is a necessity if you want to sleep well.

In addition, hot water supply is restricted to only certain time of the day. Take note of this.

Do bring your own medication for headaches & altitude sickness. Alternatively, you might want to get these capsules of liquid (made from natural herbs as per claimed by the Chinese) from your hotel. It's v. effective & you must take them as soon as you arrived. Cost = RMB 20 - 30 depending on where you get them.

Walking shoes. Layered clothing (can be cold even in the Summer).

Everything you need. Only Chinese medication are available in the pharmacy.

Altitude sickness pills & capsules are available in the hotel for around RMB20-40 (around US$5 or less).

    Zoom & wide-angle lens.
    Lots of films.
Digital camera if possible. It's easier to take photos from the bus with this.

    Coffee!!!

WATCH W/ ALTIMETER (it's all about elevation)

bring a watch with an altimeter (i had a suunto xlander).

if you're going to tibet, you'll be encountering elevations you're likely never to encounter again - personal altitude records is what i mean. might as well record it, right?

also, better to be aware of the elevations you reach so that you can better "climb high, sleep low" (pls see warnings/dangers) - the general rule in traveling at high altitude so as to avoid acute mountain sickness (AMS). being aware is key if you're going to stay healthy up here.

Better be water proof if you go there in August because it's the raining season.

Should get some warm jackets because it's very cold in the morning and evening even in summer time.

    You can buy everything there

    don't forget a torch. It's very important.

Not to many...they get stuck out at the airport, you have to wait for them to bring the bags into the CAAC baggage office in town.

Warm clothes and waterproof, good walking boots.

Altitude sickness pills. Sun protection cream. And all the usual other stuff recommended by the guide books.

Bring plenty of film and extra batteries.

There ain't no beach for a few miles or thousand, but maybe the riverbanks might count? You would have to be a real prick to want to camp outside when you can stay inside, unless your one of those stupid climbers dumping trash all over Everest!

Don't know why people rave so much about the place! I found Nepal much less barren and the people more friendly. Well unless your into wierd sh*t and enjoy watching a Tibetan burial;watching the priest chop up the deceased and crush the skull, then summon the vultures to eat the remains. Maybe practical to recycle like that, but UUUURgh!
Took a pic of a young lad on the road to Shigatse...

  • ...about a roll a day should do.

If you don't take enough with you there are plenty of shops around the Potala square selling good quality film (Kodak & Fuji) for around 25 Yuan.

Outside Lhasa it's much harder to get film so stock up before you leave.
