Any Tibetan style restaurants: Tibetan food
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The restaurant is frequently by locals, who came in to socialize, and have tea.

I had some meat buns and yak butter tea for lunch in a small local restaurant. I ordered a small tea, then I realized it came in a flask, rather than a cup! I just wanted to try the yak butter tea as it is the local specialty.

Shangrila: Eat and enjoy tibetan opera
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Shangrila offers entertainment after dinner. The waiters are giving a show with traditional tibetan music and dance. The atmosphere is great and the joy on the performers faces is overwhelming.

The food is good as long as you eat a la carta. They have a buffet at 40 Yuan, including the show, but the buffet is not large in quantity. We ate with our group and an other group of 25 people in total and the last ones at the buffet hat to scrape the dishes.
Our next visit a few days later we had a la carte and that was fine.

    Eatlovers Bakery: Very irratic service
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Although very nicely decorated and the tables looking very welcoming, this restaurant was a little disappointing. The service was VERY slow, and the food all arrived at different times, with as much of a time difference as 20 minutes from one dish to the next on the same table.

Their speciality was coffee, with 27 different varieties to choose from. They mainly served light meals for lunchtime dining.

I found the salt and pepper shaker very amusing, as we visited in September! I just HAD TO take a photo!

Their unisex facilities were very nice and clean, with the choice of Asian and a western sit down toilet. There was even toilet paper.

The Tibetan Pizza was very nice, described as having seasonal green chillies, dried onion, broth (????) and mixed vegetables.

    Snowlands Restaurant: Great choice
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • There were plenty of choices, both local and western. Items on the menu included (these were the choices of the other people in our group): lasagne (it was apparently very creamy), club sandwich, tomato soup, vegetable dhalbat, Tibetan chop suey (said by the person who ate it to be the best they had in Tibet), Shaptrak (like a beef stir fry – very tender meat, really nice), vegetable pizza, burgers, noodle soup, banana fritters, yak pepper steak (yummy), momo soup (meat dumplings) and cheese momos with a tangy sauce (quite spicy and VERY cheesy!)

Tibetan Lhasa Kitchen: Traditional and Western Food
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The restaurant is located on the first floor, and it fairly traditionally decorated. Extensive menu with western and Chinese dishes. We all chose various Tibetan dishes and everyone enjoyed their meals.

The yak curry set which consisted of rice, raw vegetables, hot pickle, vegetable curry, yak curry, dhal and garlic naan. The meat was tender and the sauce was very nice and spicy.

    Kyichu Restaurant: A confusing meal
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Quite a nice restaurant, but a lot of confusion ensued when the food was brought out, as many of the dishes which arrived, no-one had ordered, including a steak sizzler. Sarah had ordered a pepper yak, and I am sure it was the same piece of steak taken off the sizzler and placed on a normal plate!

Dishes on the menu included Briyani (which looked very nice), chicken or steak sizzler, spaghetti bolognaise, chicken tikka, dhal and rice, tandoori chicken.

I had a Kyichu Special Steak which was described as sliced tenderloin of yak with a red wine and mushroom sauce. Served medium to rare (despite ordered blue), it was very lean and tender and the vegetables came al dente. This was followed by an apple pie, which wasn’t quite as nice as it looked.

  • The restaurant was on two levels with a stage one end (see Nightlife Tips about the Crazy Yak show). The décor was of local character, and one drink was included in the cost of the buffet. You could choose between beer, water and a soft drink. Any additional drinks had to be paid for individually.

The buffet consisted of many local dishes including sheep’s lung. The fried sheep’s lung had a very strange consistency; it was not ‘solid’ like normal meat. I would not recommend it! Other dishes ranged from Yak Chow Mein, Pork and Beans, Rice, Sweetcorn with Mooli (Oriental Radish), Peas and Yak meat, Momos, Fries, Cauliflower Curry to a dish of fried Greens. Most of it was very pleasant, but nothing spectacular. The show made it.

    Lhasa Snowland Restaurant: Backpacker haven!
  • Tip Rating:

  • There are several backapacker cafes and restaurants dotted around Barkor Street so you wont get hungry. They all have english menus along with Chinese ones and other popular foreign languages. I managed to take note of some of the dishes they had at this place to give you a taster...

It was packed full of people at lunchtime when we went, so I presume it is in the guidebooks by now for all travellers to know about. It was cheap and cheerful. I bought some fantastic postcards for only 2rmb each here, of different people throughout Tibet from different sects...I will put those up here soon too.

The menu includes Continental dishes with pastas, steaks and pizza, starting at 18rmb going up to 30 rmb, then soups, salads and snacks ranging from 8rmb to 15rmb.The wonderful curry I had falls under the Indian and Nepali dishes which include all kinds of vegetable and meat curries and of course naan bread. Prices range from 12rmb to 30rmb for the curries. Tibetan dishes are cheaper from 15-25rmb and have such delicious goodies as yak calf (!), tsampa soup and momo (steamed yak dumplings). And finally the Chinese dishes have all the usual fare with desserts to follow which sound mouth watering..banana fritters, lemon cheesecake etc...

I had the chicken tikka and eventhough it was by far the best that I had had on the trip it was a little watery...no cream had been put in the sauce...unlike all the curries I get at restaurants in Beijing and abroad. But maybe Im better off this way, afterall, it would probably have been yak cream and tasted foul!!!

    Shambala Hotel: The hotel restaurant
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We only ate breakfast in the hotel restaurant, which consisted of a Chinese/Western buffet. Mostly there were things that we recognised, but this orangey ‘thingy’ took us by surprise. We thought it was a potato type pattie, but it turned out to be a swede cake. It was very chewy, and we didn’t try it again!
