When King Songtsan Gambo married the Tang Dynasty Princess Wencheng in 614, he had the palace built for his wife. In the ensuing years, the Potala Palace suffered from wars, thunderbolt and fire. Only two buildings from the original structure remain – the Cave for the Prince of Darma and the Pagbalhakang (Main Hall) and nobody knows what the palace looked like in those days. The present Potala was rebuilt in the 17th century by the 5th Dalai Lama. After the ascension of the 7th Dalai Lama, who established a summer palace at Norbulingka, the Potala was used predominately during winter. Until the mid-18th century, the palace also served as a military fortress, due to the security afforded by its elevated position. For more than 300 years, the Potala Palace was the centre from which Tibet’s political and religious administration was run. The 13th Dalai Lama undertook a renovation of the palace in the early 20th century. During the shelling of the palace by the Chinese in 1959, not much structural damage was done. The palace was also spared major destruction during the Cultural Revolution. The Potala Palace was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1994. Leave a Comment

mountain not iceberg (12x optical zoom) by mavl when planning a trip to tibet, i highly recommend including a trip to nam-tso, most stunning of tibet's four sacred lakes. although it is about 5 hours from lhasa by 4x4, nam-tso can be done in a day. you can leave lhasa early in the morning, get there just after lunch, spend an hour or two, then head back and get back to lhasa by dinnertime. no need to sleepover like others do, a couple of hours there is fine. because of its distance from lhasa and the 1100m climb, i didn't include it in my itinerary at first. but i decided to go for it on the morning of my last day because i finished my tour early and because i was already acclimatized (stay in lhasa at least 3 days before making the trip, see my warnings and dangers tips). best decision of my life! this is the most awesome place i've ever seen! clear turquoise waters with snow-capped peaks in the background! from any hotel/guesthoue in lhasa, you can join a trip to nam-tso by 4x4. cost is about Y1500-Y1600 for the roundtrip so for a group of 4, it'll be about Y400/person. entrance fee to lake is Y40/person. you can also get in touch with my guide, nga wang, to arrange a trip for you. his contact info is listed below. do it, i guarantee it'll be worth it! (see my damxoi page for more photos). Address: 5 hours north of lhasa by 4x4Phone: 0086-891-656-2494Directions: you'll be heading north beside the new tibetan railway and alongside the 7000m peaks of the nyenchen tanglha mountain range. any hote/guesthouse will also know how to help you arrange a trip.Other Contact: email: ngawangtle@yahoo.com

Locals posing in front of Jokhang Temple by RachaelClare Jokhang Temple is the holiest temple in Tibet. A visit to the temple is one of those experiences which has the potential to change the way you look at life. We visited the temple on a day that was free entrance for pilgrims - Tibetans travel from all over the country to visit this sacred place. The place was packed full and at times we felt llike sardines in a can but it was worth it for the privilege of observing people in their pilgrimage and seeing the intensity of their beliefs. It gives a deeper understanding of the Tibetan people and the importance of their cultural survival. A walk around Barkhor Square and the Temple itself is a fascinating experience. Colourful, friendly, smiling pilgrims will happily pose for photos and walk with you like old friends. Leave a Comment Directions: In the centre of the Tibetan area of town

by mavl since drepung is a complex of several buildings, it is very easy to overlook certain areas - especially if you start thinking that the different halls are starting to look alike (they're not). whatever you do, make sure you don't miss checking out the main kitchen. if you go in the morning like i suggested, you're likely to see the monks preparing lunch. this is a sight (and smell) to behold! they cook the same way they have for the last thousand years, using the same ingredients, the same ovens and furnaces, the same pots and pans, the same butter churns, same everything! pay the photograph fee of Y20, it's well worth it! (video it if you can!) Address: within drepung monasteryDirections: just west of the main assembly hall (to the left if you're facing the main assembly hall)

Vendors at Barkhor Street by mim95 This is the oldest street in Lhasa. Traditional white buildings are decorated with prayer flags and Tibetan designs. Barkhor Street is also a popular pilgrim route. Vendors line both sides of the street, selling a varieties of things from fruits and vegetables to souvenir items. There are numerous temples, restaurants and shops hidden behind the stalls. The lanesin the area is like a maze, if you don't like to get lost, just walk along the main street around Jokhang Temple. Also called Tsug Lakhang (Central Cathedral), it is Tibet’s most sacred temple. The temple was built in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo upon moving his capital to Lhasa. The building was enlarged and embellished by ensuing rulers and Dalai Lamas. Some of the chapels in the Jokhang have been destroyed and reconstructed; statuary has been defaced, replaced, restored and moved to a different location – this is an ongoing process which leaves any description out of date immediately. The Jokhang is Tibet’s most sacred shrine, and pilgrims come here from all over Tibet. Unlike most temples, the Jokhang is not identified with a particular sect. Leaders from the different sects are shown in statuary and murals. Around 100 monks live in the Jokhang, residing in the upper levels. It was used as a military kitchen during the Cultural Revolution. The Jokhang Temple is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Leave a Comment Address: On Barkhor Square, Lhasa

Potala Palace by RachaelClare A trip to Lhasa would not be complete without a visit to the Potala Palace. The Potala Palace is a symbol of so much for the Tibetan people and people around the world who have an interest in Tibetan culture. It dominates the Lhasa skyline and is such an awesome sight, it oozes emotion. As the home of the Dalai Lama it has been vacant since 1959 and therefore the inside is quite cold and dusty however using your imagination it is easy to feel how it would be if it was still the bustling place it once was. The Chinese have found that there is money to be made and they charge an outrageous 100yuan entrance fee but it is worth the expense. Leave a Comment Directions: You cant miss it!!

The summer palace of the Dalai Lama, which is said to have been preferable to the Potala Palace as the rat population was less. The first palace was built by the 7th Dalai Lama in 1755 as a place where he could handle political affairs, practice religious activities and spend holidays. Today there are three palaces in the park. During the days of the 8th Dalai Lama, a lake was dug and now there is also a zoo in the park. The name means ‘jewelled garden’ and the Dalai Lama would spend six months of the year here. A number of the buildings here were destroyed during the 1959 uprising, and the once magnificent gardens are now mostly derelict. The summer palace is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The temple was constructed by King Songtsen Gampo in 648 in order to house a Buddha Image called Akshobhya that his Nepalese wife brought with her to Tibet. Legend has it that the king’s other wife, Chinese princess Wencheng chose the position of the Jokhang as Lake Wothang in order to make the construction of this temple as difficult as possible. The lake was mysteriously filled overnight by a sacred goat, a statue of which you can see inside the Jokhang. Later, Princess Wecheng also brought a Buddha statue to the Jokhang, the Jowo Sakyamuni. The temple was much expanded during the 17th century, to its present scale. During the early days of the Cultural Revolution, much of the interior of the temple was destroyed. For a time the temple was said to be used as a pigsty. Leave a Comment
