    Debates at Sera Monastery
    by tompt
Sera Monastery is one of the 3 largest monasteries of the Gelugpa. It is located at north of Lhasa at the foot of the Tatipu Mountain. Sera means Wild Rose Garden, as there once bloomed many wild roses here. In 1414 one of Tsong Khapa's disciples build a monastery to house the treasures he got from Emperor Chengzu. The Sera monastery was completed in 1419.

The main attraction when visiting the monastery is the debates between the (student) monks. Every afternoon at 15:00 or 15:30 they have debates about religious isues in the courtyard. The monks try to make there point by clapping their hands or stamping their feeth.
To see, and hear, what it looks like we put a short movie here.

The Potala is the palace of the Dalai Lama. With the Dalai Lama no longer in Tibet it became a museum, looking empty and many rooms are closed to the public.
It is very difficult to get a ticket for the Potala, at least it was in july 2004. We had to buy our tickets at least a day in advance, and show our pasport to book it.

The Potala was built by the fifth Dalai Lama on the site of the former palace of King Songsten Gampo. Work began in 1645 and the 5th Dalai Lama moved here in 1649. The next Dalai Lamas all had their residence here.

A magnificent way to experience the views of Lhasa is to climb to the top of Jokhang Monastery. On the way pass the elderly community who come every day to pray together and spin their prayer wheels.

Once at the top you will look out over Barkhor Square and take in the city, the Potala Palace, the surrounding mountains and the pilgrims circling the monastery.

It is free to go up there and you will experience some amazing views as well as chat with the locals!

The Stables – Chibrakhang – consists of two buildings, currently under renovation. I was fascinated by the work going on, most carried out by women, and the speed at which they were working. There are said to be some striking murals depicting horses inside, but these were obviously currently out of bounds.

The Jokhang is the spiritual center of Lhasa, the main temple. The Jokhang dates back to the 7th century when Songsten Gampo built it to house the Buddha images his Nepalese wife brought as a wedding gift.
The temple you see today is not the same, but a great building several restorations later.
It is a very important temple for the pilgrims and they walk around it, a route inside and along the main statues. pilgrims don't pay an entrance fee, but you, the tourist have to. We payed 70 yuan in July 2004. For that money we got a small CDrom with some pictures and a short story about the Jokhang, and we were allowed to cut the line to get into the main chapel.
Don't forget to visit the second floor from which you have a nice view on Barkhor Square and the Potala Palace in the distance.

More pictures will be in the travelogue

    Temple a the medicinal cave
    by sachara
Not far from the Potala is a small temple with a medicinal cave. This place is situated at the lower slopes of the Chagpori, meaning "Iron Mountain'' opposite the Potala. this was the site of a famous college of medicine. The views from Chagpori at the Potala are marvellous.

During our visit the atmosphere around the small temple and the cave wasvery peacefull. It's was nice place to fly from the crowds of the Barkhor area for a while.

    Thangka's
    by sachara
At the Barkhor are a lot of stalls and shops, where you can buy almost everything, for example we saw this stall with colourfull new thangka's.

These rectangular thangkas are religious paintings on cotton or linen, that can be rolled up. Red or yellow silk is used for the border and another piece of silk or brocade serves as a mount. The rolled thangkas can easy be transported by nomads and travelling Buddhist monks. Often the thangka have a depiction of the life of Buddha.

  • Barkhor, pilgrims - Lhasa
    Barkhor, pilgrims
    by sachara
At the Barkhor, the inner pilgrim circuit of Lhasa round the Jokhang Temple, you see always a lot of pilgrims with their prayer-wheels. They turn the prayerwheels with a turn of the wrist and keep it spinning around its axis. In the spinning prayerwheels are sacred formulas like OM MANI PADME HOM.

At the same moment the pilgrims normally round the holy places in the clockwise direction. It was peculiar, that the devotees on the picture were walking in the opposite direction.

They told us, that the pilgrims believe, that they by their own circumambulation and the spinning of their prayerwheels evoke the movements of the planets in the heavens, the dance of the electrons around the nucleus and the recurring circle of life.

    Pilgrims
    by sachara
At the square in front of the temple and at the entrance we saw always prostrating pilgrims. The devotees making a pilgrimage repeatedly measure out their length over the entire journey. This mode of postration expresses the maximum devotion by exaggerating the difficulty of their journey.

Tibetan Buddhists believe, that the making of one hundred prostrations is the first step to acquiring a vast number of merits and will bring a profound purification.

At the top of the Jokhang Temple you can have a very close look at the rich ornamented corners of the gilded bronze roof. It's amazing to see the many tiny details of this piece of art.

In Brahmin mythology is told, that Vishvakarman, the architect of the universe, blacksmith and jeweller, god and patron of the manual crafts, sculpted himself one of the most famous Buddhas in the temple. The sculptor of these ornaments looked also be inspired by this god of the manual crafts.
