In contrast to other Tibetan monasteries, the Jokhang Temple is used by people of all the different sects of Buddhism and has not an own monastic community. All kind of pilgrims with different dialects, faces, clothes and colours come to visit the Temple and the Barkhor.

At the square in front of the Jokhang Temple you see a lot of small streetstalls, selling goods at the pilgrims, like scarfs, flags and thangkas. From the Temple you have a good view at this always busy square.

    Sera, burning yak butter
    by sachara
In the Sera Monastery, as in all monasteries, you can find butter lamps, burning perpetually before statues and images. The lamps are replenished by the dignitaires or villagers.

In front of statues, thangkas and stupas in Tibet you will find vessels for reception of offerings from devotees, usually containing five different elements: water, flowerseeds, incense, tsampa and butter for the lamps. These five kinds of offerings stand for the five aspects of wisdom and the five senses, the dhyani-Buddhas.

    Sera Monastery

In this Gelukpa Monastery we saw wonderful wall-paintings and statues. Special things we saw here, were the preserved cham-masques for the mystery performances and very holy applies as the magical dagger (phurbu) of the founder of the monastery, Xiajia Yixi, disciple of Tsong Khapa.

As the Sera monastery was the first monastery we visited in Tibet, we were overwhelmed by the very colourful interior with red pillars and bright coloured and embroidered hangings and seeing the monks, making the conical tormas. It was really impressive to be there.

Inside the monastery we saw a small chorten with some Tibetans rounding it. It is a custom to do this in the clockwise direction.

Chortens, the Tibetan name for stupas or pagodas, contain often holy relics. Chortens became the pure symbols for the ultimate attainment, to be realized as no-attainment actually. The levels of a chorten from ground to peak symbolize the stages on the way, equated with the 5 elements.

The square base stands for earth, the round dome for water, the conical spire for fire, the umbrella for air and the peak for mind-essence.

On our first day in Lhasa we visited the Sera Monastery, the first one in Tibet. When we arrived at the monastery, the young monks were very curious. They welcomed us friendly and showed us the way in the direction of the temples. It was a really nice first encounter with the life in the monasteries.

It was a pity we lost so much time in Chengdu, waiting for our plane to Lhasa. So we could stay only for a short time at this monastery and did only visit one of the temples and not the rockpaintings up the mountain behind the monastery.

On top of the Jokhang temple in Lhasa, are two ghazelles and the dharma wheel in between. This gilded wheel of law flanked by the ghazelles above the entrances to the sanctuaries is a rememberance of Buddha's first sermon, given in the park of the Ghazelles at Sernath near Benares.

At the left side of the picture you can see the so called gyeltsen or victory standard with pages of the holy scripture inside.

The Drepung Monastery stands at the foot of the mountain Gyengbuwudze and has wonderfull views across the Lhasa valley.
This Gelupka monastery was founded in 1416 by a disciple of Tsong Khapa, Jianyang Qujie. Drepung developed at one of the largest and wealthiest monasteries of Tibet.

In the 17th century there live more than 10.000 monks, at the time of the departure of the Dalai Lama to India still 6.000 and now barely 400. Drepung was a important monastic university for tantrism, teaching of the sutra's, dialectics, meditation and other teachings.

    Barkhor

The Jokhang Temple is surrounded by the Barkhor. The Barkhor is the inner pilgrim circuit of Lhasa, shaped in the form of an octagon. You have to go round in the clockwise direction.

Along the Barkhor you can find a lot of marketstalls, shops and streetvendors. It is a very lifely place to go and to spend some time to look at the the daily life of the Tibetan people and devotees or do some shopping.

    Jokhang Temple

The Jokhang Temple was founded in 650 by Songtsen Gampo. The main hall -with a famous sitting statue of Sakyamuni- is surrounded by chapels dedicated to Buddhist deities and Tibetan kings and queens.

The Jokhang Temple is four storeys high. On the roof you have a fantastic view at the Potala Palace. Also you can have a good look at the marvellous decorations on the rooftops of the Jokhang Temple.

    Jokhang Temple, entrance

The Jokhang Temple with the surrounding Barkhor is the beating religious heart of Lhasa. I went several times to the Barkhor and the square in front of the Jokhang temple. I walked around or sat down watching everything, what happened and feeling the special atmosphere.

At the entrance of the temple hung a lot of prayerflags, waving in the breeze. Also there were a lot of worshipping devotees around with their prayerwheels or postrating in front of the temple.
