This kid shows one of the rare signs of the influence of tourism. His village is along the main road going south-west from Lhasa, so he has obviously learned that it can be worth it trying his luck. The poverty in the villages is nonetheless striking.

Favorite thing: Eternal snow is one of the visions one gets at such altitude, not far after the 5200m high Kamba La Pass. It was a change from all the barren mountains we had seen so far in this end of the summer. We could easily understand why the roads were so battered with rocks and rain drains.

Favorite thing: Lake Yamdrok Yamtso is a huge stretch of water which comes from rains and melting snow. This picture is my favorite one of Tibet as it captures some of the amazing contrasts and colours of this land perched on top of the world, right beneath the sky.

Favorite thing: This huge lake (634 sq km) is along the road from Lhasa to Gyangze, 4484m above sea level - one of the four holy lakes of Tibet. It is seen here from the Kamba La Pass, about 5200m high. It is very cold and windy up there, and the car's engine had a hard time getting started again, so enjoy the view and then dash off!

Favorite thing: Typical contrast of barren mountains, and cultivated plains with some sign of human presence. This is what the countryside looks like close to Lhasa: flat cultivated lands with massive barren mountains rising everywhere.
