Mad Yak: Butter Tea

by Sharrie

This restaurant serves Tibetan & Chinese buffet with a cultural show included after dinner. What is interesting though is my first taste of butter tea. Yep, butter tea, ie. tea salted with butter. Ever tried that? It's a local Tibetan drink. To me, it taste somewhat like milk with a little salt in it. Anyhow, as sugar is virtually absent in the Tibetan daily life, tea is given energy content by dissolving butter & mixing salt in the local churn.Another type of typical Tibetan drink is the Chang. It is a thirst-quenching & nourishing drink usually used in rituals. Devotees will dip the ring finger of the right hand & spray it up while reciting a mantra before drinking Chang.

Dunya Restaurant & Bar: Western cuisine

by Sharrie

Nice ambience & good food. Owner from Rotterdam & was a former travel guide in Tibet. I guess you could get free advise if you lunch & dine here? ;-)Outlet only opens 8 months a year. There's a bar & you can relax, play chess or cards after your dinner.Favorite Dish: Yak steak & enchilada. Ryan & Michael enjoyed the enchilada v. much! Remarkably good, if not the very best I've ever tried!

Sending a quick e-mail is possible from the Barkhor Café (opposite the Jokhang Temple, on the corner of Jokhang Square), which has a small number of computer terminals. Also, the Snowlands Restaurant nearby does a great Pizza! Beefy at http://www.tibet.freeserve.co.uk

Tashi: Tashi restaurant Shigatse

Nepali curries and dhal (lentil stew), yak sizzler, pizza and salad. Bit tricky to locate it - 2nd floor at the end of the shopping street.

Lhasa Beer

by tremendopunto

On my search for local specialties, I came along the Lhasa beer - the name alone is worth drinking it, but it really is good stuff ;-)

Various: Fried sheep's lung

by grets

The fried sheep’s lung had a very strange consistency; it was not ‘solid’ like normal meat. I would not recommend it!

Various: Yak spring roll

by grets

The yak spring rolls were nice and crispy on the outside, and the filling was quite pleasant. The fries were nice and crisp.
