Buddha along the road by sachara Tibetans paint or carve often images of Buddha along the road. Sometimes it looked like they used every open stone surface for this purpose, So we saw allready the first paintings at the first day, when we drove from from the airport to Lhasa. Some of the paintings still have very bright colours. Others are faded away. Leave a Comment Directions: Road from the airport to Lhasa.

Tashilhunpo Monasteryanstery by sachara Xigaze is the second largest city in Tibet with around 40.000 inhabitants. Xigaze is an important city because it is the seat of the Panchen Lama, Tsong Khapa, the originator of the Yellow Hat Sect or Gelukpa sect. The famous Grand Tashilhunpo Monastery in Xigaze is built in 1447. The monastery is rather large with a lot of buildings. The monastery itself looks like a small town. For more information: look at my Xigaze-page Leave a Comment Directions: Nearly an one-day trip west of Lhasa.

the distinctive colors of Sakya by tompt 130 kilometers southwest of Shigatse is the Sakya monastery. Sakya means Grey Soil. Its walls are painted in red, white and grey stripes. Houses in the neighbourhood with the same color patern give notice they belong to the Sakyapa. Founded by Khon Konchog Gyalpo in 1073 it once ruled Tibet. The Sakya monastery has many murals, mostly from this period, the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368). The Sakyapa sect is different from for instance the Gelugpa, it allows marriage and its religious power is inherited from paternal uncle to nephew while its political authority from father to son. Sera Monastery by sachara If you have not enough time to travel around in Tibet, you can visit some momasteries not far from Lhasa. Three KM north of Lhasa is the rather small Sera Monastery, a Gelukpa monastery. Six KM west of Lhasa is the Drepung Monastery, also a Gelupka monastery, one of the largest in the world. The location of this monastery in the valley of Lhasa is superb. See for more information my Lhasa page. Leave a Comment Address: Area of Lhasa

Yamdrok Tso by sachara On our way from Lhasa to Xigaze we took the interesting south road via Gyantse. From the valley of the Tsangpo river we took a winding road to the 4.900 M high Khamba La pass. From here we had no view at the Yamdrok Tso lake because of the clouds. After descending a few 100 Ms we finally had this very spectacular view at the lake. Yamdro Tso, meaning ''turquoise lake'' lies in central Tibet and is one of the four large lakes in Tibet. Yamdrok Tso, surrounded by impressive mountains, is a holy lake at high altitude. The blue color of the lake is beautifull and changes with the weather. The Yamdrok Tso is about 240 KM in circumference. Leave a Comment

Drepung Monastery by sachara Sometimes you're lucky to have the possibility to attend a ceremony. When we visited the Drepung Monastery in 1991 a procession with a very large thangka just started. First he trumpets were used to call on and warn the spirits of ceremonials. The smaller have a strident sound. The huge copper and brass ones give a deep shuddering roar, audible for miles. Jokhang Temple, inner court by sachara The Jokhang temple is the religious centre of Lhasa. You will see a lot of pilgrims around, praying and prostating. From the roof of the temple you have a the most breathtaking view at the Potala Palace and the city, you can ever imagine. Round the Jokhang Temple is the Barkhor, a street with a lot of streetstalls and shops. The Barkhor is Lhasa's inner pilgrimage circuit. You have to go round clockwise. Khamba La pass with view at the lake by sachara The road from Lhasa to Gyantse and Xigaze goes up to the Khamba La pass of 4.900 M. It is a narrow spectacular road with fantastic views at the bare mountains and the valleys. The higher you goes, how bigger the chance of clouds. But also the views between the clouds at the valleys are fantastic. At the Khamba La pass are a lot of prayerflags. If you are lucky and it's not cloudy, you will have the most spectacular view ever... at the Yamdrok Tso. On our way back from Gyantse to Lhasa we were that lucky ! colorful but wet and muddy campground at Zhigung by tompt When we visited the Drigung Til monastery 125km from Lhasa we were very lucky to witness a festival held only in the year of the ape. We camped with over 100,000 tibetans near the monastery. In the early morning we walked up the mountain to see a skyburial at the monasteries dürto, the most holy one in the Lhasa region. Nearby are is also the Tidrum Nunnery with its medicinal hot springs. A 3 night camping trip we will never forget. More about it at our Zhigung page. Leave a Comment
