GO TO NAM-TSO (highest lake in the world)

by mavl

when planning a trip to tibet, i highly recommend including a trip to nam-tso, most stunning of tibet's sacred lakes. although it is about 5 hours from lhasa by 4x4, nam-tso can be done in a day. you can leave lhasa early in the morning, get there just after lunch, spend an hour or two, then head back and get back to lhasa by dinnertime. no need to sleepover like others do, a couple of hours there is fine.because of its distance from lhasa and the 1100m climb, i didn't include it in my itinerary at first. but i decided to go for it on the morning of my last day because i finished my tour early and because i was already acclimatized (stay in lhasa at least 3 days before making the trip).best decision of my life! this is the most awesome place i've ever seen! clear turquoise waters with snow-capped peaks in the background! from any hotel/guesthoue in lhasa, you can join a trip to nam-tso...

Potala Palace

by Helga67

The Potala palace is the landmark of Lhasa and Tibet and has been put on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list since 1994. It's also the largest complex in Tibet measuring 350 by 270 metres with about 1,000 rooms. It's an amazing building with white and red buildings and golden roofs, located on a hill.It was once the seat of the Tibetan governement and the home of many Dalai Lamas. The last one, the 14th Dalai Lama, fled in 1959 to India.Inside you can visit the living quarters of the Dalai Lama, some stunning chörten tombs in pure gold bedecked with many jewels, and many chapels with buddhas. It took us 2 hours to get around. Unfortunately you cannot take pictures inside and be aware there are cameras everywhere: Big Brother is watching you.Entrance: 100 Yuan

Jokhang Temple

by Helga67

This is the most sacred temple in Tibet. It is frequented by many pilgrims paying tribute to a.o. a pure gold statue of the Buddha Sakyamuni. Just follow the crowd of pilgrims through halls, shrines and galleries containing beautiful Tibetan art.Don't miss the rooftop with golden statues and a wonderful view of the square in front of the temple, and the Potala palace. Open from sunrise to sunset.Entrance: 70 Yuan

The road from Kathmandu to Lhasa

by tremendopunto

This is an adventurous tour of about 1.000 km through the evergreen Nepali side, over the high passes of the Himalaya and through the waste lands of Tibet. Massive road constructtion forced us to take the worst ways possible - suffering a flat tire and a broken axle of another jeep. But I guess next year the charm of the bone-rattling, neck-breaking Friendship Highway will be gone with the arrival of a real highway that deserves the name. The same trip will be so comfortable, I would miss the jumps ;-) Because I mention the main sights in special tips, I will just describe the landscape along this "road"-trip over the Friendship Highway by the following pics. But myVideo: From Kathmandu to Tibet says more than thousand words ;-)

Pelkor Chöde Monastery

by tremendopunto

Gyantse offers a beautiful monastery embraced by a hillside and a defencsiv wall around it. Inside this area you also find the Kumbu Chörten (see the following tip). The whole area gets dominated by the Gyantse Dzong that reigns on the top of a mountain.Dont miss to inhale this incredible atmosphere inside the monastery! In one word: amazing! But hey, a picture says more than thousand words and my Shigatse and Gyantse VIDEO tells more than thousand pics ;-)

Tashilunpo Monastery

by tremendopunto

The Tashilunpo is a magnificent monastery in Shigatse. It is one of the six great Gelugpa monasteries and home of the Panchen Lama - who is, by the way still hidden by the Chinese. Situated at the foot of Drölma Ri, there is also a nice Kora (or pilgrimage) around the monastery possible. Dont miss it, since you will have a great view over the huge monastery and the complete city of Shigatse.Watch Shigatse and Gyantse Video!

The Drepung Monastery

by tremendopunto

Within close distance around Lhasa you can find the major monasteries of the Gelugpa Order. Drepung is still the biggest one with round about 600 monks today. In the past it was the largest monastery of the world with more than 10.000 monks. Dont get lost in the narrow alleys embraced by beautiful decorated buildings because it got the size of a small city! But you can still see many ruins of destroyed buildings from the cultural revolution. The surrounding is also worth to take a look at. On the left side you can take a hike up to the pitoresque stone paintings. Behind the monastery on the ascent of the mountain you can see a rock plateau where the traditional sky burial took place. In one sentence, Drepung is a MUST!Watch Sera and Drepung Video !

The Sera Monastery

by tremendopunto

The Sera Monastery is situated just a few kilometers outside the Holy City of Lhasa, the Seat of the Gods. In past days there were more than 5.000 inhabitants which has been reduced to a few hundreds nowadays. But still the huge number of buildings and alleys give the impression of a small city. But dont think of monasteries as stonage anymore. Ive seen monks with mobile phones and as an entrance ticket you get a CDRom, I couldnt believe it! One of the most interesting things to me were the Debating Classes, taking place everyday in Sera. A big number of monks come together and discuss their philosophical and religious standpoints. Each argument is stressed by clapping with your hands. Most of the times it is a one-on-one, sometimes there are two or even three monks discussing with only one opponent. In the end they reach a uniting conclusion.Really fascinating! In addition I did the Kora...

The Potala Palace

by tremendopunto

The Potala Palace, maybe the most famous building in Tibet, known by every tourist, is still able to keep its promise, even if you have seen all the movies and reports you wont be disappointed, because it is incredible! The Potala dominates the city from a hill right in the center of Lhasa. It is the highest building in town and can be seen from nearly every point of the city. Despite the fact that the days are gone when religious and political decisions for Tibet were made here, it is not a dead and dusty museum. There is a vivid life inside and around the building because of the huge number of pilgrims visiting it each day (at least during my stay). The building consists of up to 13 storeys and can be devided into the Red and the White Palace. Walk all the way through mystic dark halls filled with incense, chapels and rooms up to the roof from where you have the best view over the...

Ganden Monastery

by tremendopunto

Ganden is situated in the most spectacular way of the three major monasteries around Lhasa:It is seated on top (on the shoulder) of a mountain, formed like the old roman or greek theaters of the past. You have to climb steep curves to reach it on a height of 4500m. But it also suffered the strongest damages by the Chinese. You will see many ruins, so you can imagine its former size. But there are also many renovations going on and parts get built up again, which gives hope for the future. One of the most spectacular things you can do at Ganden is the HIGH Kora which climbs up the peak on the left side for quite some additional meters, which make it close to 5.000m! From the top you have a great surrounding panorama down on the monastery and further down into the different valleys on the sides! There is also a LOW Kora to do, but it is not as spectacular as the high one.You can get to...
