If you stay overnight in Aksu, coming from Kucha, you can start very early and take the road via Wushi and Akqi to Kashgar. This road goes into the higlands of Tianshan and gives you unforgettable views of wide graslands, snowcapped mountains and adobe-villages. Nomads are there with their cattle and goats. Sometimes there are camels. And in the mountains you can watch marmots playing in the gras.
I was there with an organized tour. I am not sure, whether there is public transport in this remote valleys.
You can see some impressions of this trip in my travelogue, but I have put most pics in good quality in my Webalbum

Aksu is a drab Chinese town of about 500.000 inhabitants. The city itself has not much to offer for tourists. Of course there is a colorful bazaar and some old streets. But mainly Aksu is a convenient stop on the road between Kashgar and Turpan or Urumqi. Aksu International Hotel is nice - nothing special. I actually forgot most of my 12 hours overnight stay in Aksu.
