Bread

by nepalgoods

This kind of bread is very typical for Xinjiang. Normally in China bread has been unknown until only recently. But this bread has been made by nomads in Central Asia and oriental areas since thousands of years. When it is fresh it is very delicious. And it is cheap.

Mosques

by nepalgoods

Xinjiang is a mainly Muslim Province in China. Specially in Kashgar I saw many lively mosques. Men are going for prayer into the small neighborhood mosques. And sometime you can hear the faint sound of the muezzin calling people for prayer. Before you enter a mosque, you should take off your shoes!

Kazak wedding

by dipendra

In the morning, when we walk around the vallage. we found lots of people walked to the same direction with some gifts in their hand. and we followed them, then reached the wedding house. we're the only people didn't bring any gift though, we're welcomed by them. They don't understand Mandarian, we just communicate by smile.

The people

by SirRichard

When crossing the Tien Shan Mountains we stopped a few times on the way, just to walk around a bit as the bus was really small. If there were nomads tents nearby, people always came to look at us "weird foreigns", pointed at us and laughed... I guess they are not very used to see tourists in this part of the world!

Like other ethnic tribes in Western China, those in Xinjiang such as the Kazakhs and Uyghurs have very colourful attires and cultures. You can purchase some of these as souvenirs, especially the beautifully decorated caps.

Woman chasing man on horsebacks

by victorwkf

One of the interesting culture of the Kazakh people is woman chasing man on horsebacks which is known as "Gu Niang Zui" in Chinese. Apparently it is some form of dating ritual and so much for the male chauvanist pig !

Knifes

by victorwkf

Besides carpets, Xinjiang is famous for its beautifully designed traditional knifes which can be bought throughout the country. The only problem is bringing the knifes back home, due to the tightened security checks nowadays.

Carpets

by victorwkf

Like many other places in central Asia, Xinjiang has lots of very beautifully woven carpets. You can also buy these carpets at department stores and bazaars throughout the province, especially at Urumqi.
