Lamb feast

by mashimashi

If you don't eat lamb, you can eat vegetable. but it might be difficult for you to get vegetable in some primitive area, they drnik goat milk and eat lamb only. I love lamb meat but hate goat milk, they have very very strange taste. So my suggestion for you is to bring some instant noodle, they surely have hot water.

Road restaurants

by SirRichard

We stopped a few times to have a snack or lunch at these road stalls you can find in Xingiang roads. It was not touristic at all, in fact I think we were the first westerners they had seen in years!Fortunately we had a chinese guide, so he arranged the menu, as everything was written in chinese! We had really traditional chinese meal:- A big bowl of hot hot hot soup made out of some unknown veggies (good)- A mix of little plates with meat and mushrooms and vegetables (all to be eaten with sticks as there were no "western" forks and knives in the place).- Water melon for dessert- And to drink, warm beer! They didn't know the ice there (of course there was no freezer). They used to drink hot water while eating, and were really amazed when we asked for "cold beer"!

The original spaghetti

by SirRichard

As you probably know, spaghetti originally came from China and the East. I think it was Marco Polo who brought this delicious pasta to Italy...Anyway, at one of our stops on the way to Urumqi, we had the chance to see the way the chinese make these pasta strings from a round big ball. They strecht it and squeeze it once and again till they get these thin strings, is a really amazing show, they are really skilled at it!

Roasted whole lamb

by victorwkf

One of the food you must try when in Xinjiang is their famous roasted whole lamb which is available in restaurants. The roasted lamb should be tasty with very little of the strong smell if it is done properly.

Grapes & melons

by victorwkf

Xinjiang is famous for its very tasty grapes and melons, and you must try these fruits when you are there, especially on a hot day. There is a famous grape valley near to Turpan town and this is a good place to try these fruits.

Local food of the Kazakh

by victorwkf

When you visit the house of the Kazakh people, you will have chance to try the various foods which are mostly fried stuff. They will also serve you goat's milk tea which I do not really like because it is sour. Nevertheless, you should give it a try as it is a popular beverage in Xinjiang.

John's café!Plov again!...

by titti

John's café!Plov again! Steamed buttery rise mixed with carrot and mutton. After two weeks of this food (Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan) sniffing out the plov presence again, the English menu in John’s café looked like a dream.I couldn’t resist trying the Chinese interpretation of pizza: a round unleavened bread covered with a huge amount of fried vegetables. Don’t follow me! Try the steamed “momo”, chinese ravioli stuffed with vegetables, and local dishes.Nice, friendly western atmosphere; thanks to L.P., all tourists in town gather here for breakfast, lunch and dinner. About the pic, the story will come...
