You can find a couple of local street markets in Turpan. Even tough you are not willing to buy, take a walk around the market to discover the local life and activity. First hour in the morning is the best time, as it is the hours when the market is more active.

This women's clothes shop seemed from outside anything but a women's clothes shop. No windows, no clothes shown from outside.... but the hand painted sign indicated there could be something there, so we went in.
Not too bad, interesting inside, though we finally didn't buy any pret-a-porter made in Xinjiang!

Q: When is the best time to visit Turpan? I would love see the grapes fruit ripening and harvest them.
A: I know little about that area but they do have their grape festival in August.

I was at Turpan as part of my China silk road and sichuan province trip in Sep 2002. Would like to share with you some of my experiences.

Several of the cities we have visited in Central Asia claim to have the ideal climate for growing the sweetest watermelons. Turpan however, specialises in grapes - small, sweet and delicious.
