The rendezvous is situated on 960 YAN AN Road in the south end of Urumqi next to the silkroad Hotel. Busses 912, 63, 106,16 stop right outside the doors coming from the north. It is opened for 5 years now and have built a reputation for cakes and great fast food. They serve a range of wraps, pizza's and burgers among others. They also serve breakfastofthe weekends. You can contact them at this number 2555003.
Favorite Dish: My favourite is the Enchilada's and the Chiffon cake. The burgers are pure beef patties and the breads are all made at the cafe.

This is legit Tex-Mex and Soutwestern style steaks/burgers/pasta washed down with a cold beer or shake. Excellent food. Don't miss the fresh cakes of the day. Its foreign owned and the local staff are excellent with pretty decent English. You can do wireless internet and browse the travel books. The interior of the place is completely old Texas steak house style but you can get a table on the front porch in a busy minority neighborhood.
Favorite Dish: Maybe the chicken-fried-steak or the beef fajitas.

Despite the desperately cold weather in Urumqi, there were thousands of street vendors selling all kinds of food.
After filling up on a variety of lamb and beef kebabs, I bought kilos of nuts and dreid fruit for a long train journey.
The vendors are friendly and will offer a taste of anything you don't recognise - which was quite a lot!
Favorite Dish: The dreid apricots and the walnuts were a great reminder of Urumqi for a whole week travelling around Gansu in December!

Local restaurant provides basic and typical food. Goats are the major animal they feed and therefore they eat their meat and drink the milk. I took some time to adapt to the special taste of the food. IT is a bit difficult for throse living in the modern city.

Chinese restaurant at the OASIS HOTEL
41 Qingnian Lu, Turpan / Phone: 852 2491. Fax: 852 3348.
For Chinese food there is a whole series of touristy restaurants with English menus, to the west of the main crossroads north of the Turpan Guesthouse. All have outdoor tables and chairs under the vines, with reasonable prices and friendly service - though check carefully the prices of what you are ordering. Try liang ban hong gua, a delicious cold cucumber salad with garlic and soya sauce. For more upmarket Chinese food, try one of the restaurants in the Oasis Hotel (see Photo), while basic, cheap Uigur staples can be picked up in the stalls and cheap resaurants in the west of town on Laocheng Lu, near the bazaar.

Favorite Dish: The most delicious food should be mutton barbecue. Both the flavour and the meat is excellent! You can buy them easily in the street.
Different kinds of fruit can be found easily in XinJiang. Most of them are delicious and cheap. Among of all, seedless grapes in Turpan taste excellent.

Cold...very cold...but warm inside!

Urumqi - or Wulumuqi as it said on the side of the train to Lanzhou - is very cold in winter. It is the furthest place (in Asia? the world?) from the sea, and the geographical centre of Asia is just...
