Many carpet shops on the second floor of the new Erdaqiao market buiding in Urumqi.
There are three names listed here, but they seem to work together to some extent in shops B65 and B48.
All three are very trustworthy and they shipped carpets to Beijing. All arrived in perfect condition.

All three can arrange freight and insurance, but none speak any English at all.
What to buy: Khotan carpets are good value here, but since SARS Beijing prices are now comnpetitive when you factor in the freight charges.
I heard that Baoutou carpets come via Beijing though.
What to pay: Varies enormously. It depends on how well you bargain and how much they think you will pay. Expect to negotiate for half a day to get the best prices.

What to buy: This Chinese herb, ÌìɽѩÁ«, can only be found growing in Qinghai, Xinjiang's Tian Shan and Tibet. Its a flower that grows along the altitude line in the mountain where you have permanent snow above and non-permanent snow below. The fastest it takes to grow and bloom and then ready for picking is at least 6 years.
It is the only Chinese herb known that has the property that is capable of guiding yin to yang and yang to yin and attaining the correct final balance. It is actively research for in its medical properties by Chinese physicians e.g. in treatment of old-age rheumatism.
The best way to take the essence of this herb is to prepare it with white wine.
There's a close cousin to this herbal plant which looks very similar but grows at lower altitudes as low as 1800m. If you plan to buy
, be careful to differentiate what you are buying.
Of course, it is an expensive herb.
