Not to bargin with Uygur people

by yirutang

I was told not to bargin with Uygur people because they will get offended if you asked the price of their goods but not buy it eventually.I found it a bit annoying doing business (buy stuff) with the Uygur(I know it is politically incorrect). They like to change their words and don't have the idea of contract. A little boy who offered me to take a picture with his goat. He told me the price will be 3 yuan but after taking the picture, he said the price is 10 yuan. I argued with him and I was lucky not to get big attention from other Uygur people since it was on very popular tourism spot. I heard another real story that some tourist get into the same situation as I do and got attention from other Uygur people and finally get robbed.

Dust & pollution

by victorwkf

One major problem in Xinjiang is the dust created by the desert which sometimes can lead to sandstorms which are very dangerous and unpredictable. Another problem is pollution, especially near to mining areas and oil refineries which are common in some parts due to Xinjiang's rich natural resources.

How to cope with the heat and dryness

by victorwkf

Drink lots of bottled water and eat lots of fruits such as grapes and melons which are readily available at a very cheap cost because the weather is going to be hot and dry, especially during summer in June to August.

Be well prepared

by victorwkf

Due to the remoteness and harshness of Xinjiang, it is advisable not to attempt driving or exploring the place without proper guidance. The distances are long, land is dry and the weather can be very unpredictable.

watch out, your pockets

by jasmine_ding

When you taste kabobs in night markets or buy some souvenirs from "Er Dao Qiao" market in Ulumuchi, you should pay attention to your pockets. Loss of cash or other things is not interesting at all.
