Aoma Meili Pub: American Barman, great cocktails

Right by the Camellia Hotel, this was the only place I found in Kunming with a Western barman. The place seems almost like a bar, but not completely... There were no cocktails worth mentioning on the menu, but they could make anything I asked for (I am not a drinker of obscure cocktails). Oh! And they have BBQ ribs!!! Small portion, but still BBQ ribs!!!

Zhong He Bar: Bar with music

This bar was very close to where I was staying on the southern side of Green Lake Park and so I popped in one evening to see what it was all about. The place was packed and a live band were playing some kind of Chinese attempt at Rock 'N' Roll. Anyway, I didn't stay very long. A small bottle of Heineken beer cost RNB20.

BAO SHAN HOTEL Building: Discotheque

At the side entrance of the Bao Shan Hotel, you will find on the third floor a discotheque and at the same floor a big scenery, where every evening a special (chinese) show is performed.
Good entertainment, joyful shows and every evening another show. Drinks are not expensive.
A nice place, good music, a bit noicy, nice people, good service and very few western visiters.

Dress Code: A bit casual, but not to much.

Beijing Road: Taking a drink in Kunming

In the evening time, when you like to take a drink, just go the the Beijing Road at the level of the two big arcs of the city, and just follow all Chinese youngsters who like to take a drink just at this place ot the town at 3 min. walking.
Most of the time, they are drinking Chinese beer, (which are not bad at all ) in this small area, where many big beer bars are situated. If you don't like the admosphere, just stay in your hotel lobby.
I was with some chinese students, taking a "forfait" of 6 or more bottles of Yunnan beers, which are served in a tiny little glass and had good fun. the prices are really not high.
When looking to enclosed photos, you'll find this places very easily, because I forgot the chinese names of these places.

Camel Bar: Typical expat bar

These type of bars are not my favorite, but i use them as a base to find out more information about other interesting places to visit :-)

People just sit around, chatting away. If i remembered correctly, there's a pool table (darn! must be the beers!)

If you're into people watching - skip this place (i'll get some nasty feedback soon from the owner for this "advertisement")

Btw, RMB10 will get you to Kundu area from this bar.
Happy partying!

Dress Code: Naked :-)

Don't blame me if you are refused entry.

I ended up at this place at the suggestion of a local expat i met at Camel bar.
Boy this place rocks! mostly chinese, and few expats sweating it out in the packed disco.

Drinks are reasonable - RMB 20 for a huge glass of J.daniels+coke (quite strong) - Price as at Sept 05

Dress Code: Casual - or dress to kill if you want.

There are a few spots around the Hump hostel area, mix of locals and 'lao wais'..
Drinks are from RMB 15 onwards.

I checked out a couple of them, and they have girls dancing on podiums later at night (after 11pm).. these girls are cute - but I don't have their pictures ... ;)

It's sometimes quite crowded, many foreigners come here to have fun, drink beer, dance as well as few locals. There is also nice selection of cocktails for reasonable price. Sometimes they have live music and pool competitions... in matter of fact, very nice and relaxed place:)

Chapter One: A good pub

The area of Wen Lin Jie, near the Universities in the north has many western style cafes and pubs. Chapter One is my favorite. The place has free internet (and wi-fi). It also has back issues and current issues of the Economist and Newsweek. Every other Wednesday it has a fun pub quiz. The food is average, but the beer is the same as everywhere else.

Well, described in the Rough Guide as a maze of bars is somewhat of an understatement. Go into one bar just off Jinbi Lu, exit via a different door and its like the streets of Monkok. Lots of different bars, but with generally the same theme : Local talent singing their tunes. From the utterly dire to professional.

We had a good time in many of the bars. The only exception was the absolute listening bar where they tried to charge us twice for the drinks, and as Westerners were charged about RMB5 more per drink than the locals.

Dress Code: Anything.
