Get the Kunming City Map at any news agent. RMB3.50 each. The bus routes are detailed there in chinese.
The public buses are a convenient way to get around Kunming. Prepare lots of 1 yuan notes/coins. You are required to pay when you get onto the bus, no change is given.
Each bus trip costs 1 yuan. Take the big bus at the proper bus-stops. Avoid the small van-type bus as they may charge more especially if you are a tourist.
Occasionally there are the medium size bus. These are a luxury, because it costs 2 yuan, and provide better quality seats. Because it is more expensive, your chance of getting a seat is bigger.
Some buses are equiped with screen display which shows the next bus stop in both English and Chinese.

There are hawker stalls selling drinks and food on every platform the train stops. People love to go down to have a walk, strectch a bit, breath some fresh air, as well as buying food. They are a little cheaper the buying on the train, and more variety.

This is the bus I took from Kunming to Dali. Price 65 Yuan. They told me 4-5 hours, but I was stuck in the bus for 7 hours before arrivng Dali! Some people vomit on the bus, and one local fainted half way adn was sent to hospital by police. I should have taken the train instead!!!

There are 2 long distance bus terminals in Kunming. This Zhong-Be Station run buses to Dali and other Yunnan places, departing hourly. Tickets available at the station, or can be bought at hotel or travel agencies at the same price. Some agencies provide free transfer / pick up at the hotel.

The best way to go is by airplane from Zuhai, Canton Sheng. It takes one and a half hours to fly. Buy tickets from the local agents for a cheaper price at about 720 RMB (one way ticket.) In China, they always sell one way ticket unless you specify.
If go by train, it needs 30 hours to take. Most of people would rather choose airplane.

I joined a local tour to Stone Forest due to the long distance from the city. If you can, try to hire a cab instead & don't join a local tour here. It's amazing the number of shopping stops the company will bring you to - 5 in 1 day! Not much time left for sightseeing at all!

Bicycles in Kunming. Our air ticket from Kunming to Bangkok cost RMB380 (one way) but we bought an expensive RMB1750 from Chengdu to Kunming. Public buses are so convenience, they have numbers as usual, hop on the bus, the conductor will come to collect money from you, this is our daily transportation to explore Kunming but always expect a full crowded bus.
Another way to get around in Kunming is to hire a electronic bicycle, it cost just a little amount. This bicycle is a local made product with an engine installed at the back to save you pedalling.
