The Naxi/Tibetan idea of beauty is different from the rest of the world. While most of us think that having pasty white skin and an emanciapted body are hallmarks of beauty, the Naxi think that we're nuts. A typical Naxi Beauty is as plump as a dumpling and tanned as leather. And so are the men.
Yes, my husband actually loves this place since a man will not be slapped over here for saying that his wife looks fat in a dress. In fact, it's very flattering to call a young lady pang-jin-mei (fat gold sister). Same goes for the men. Fat Bastard* will not feel out of place over here since he'll be called pang-jin-ge(fat gold brother).

Just like the Minangkabau culture in Indonesia, the NAXI culture is matriachal. The women work in the fields all day long while the men take it easy. On top of that, the women are free to take on as many lovers as possible since marriage is an unknown instituition. However, all these free lovin' swingin' habits have since been watered down by communist measures.
Marriage and divorce are now familiar instituitions like anywhere else. Still, some habits die hard and you still see more women entrepreneurs compared to men (just like I observed in Indonesia) over here.

As the Naxi culture is headed by females, they walk around looking proud and strong. You will have the opportunity to see them walking both in the new and old town. This photo shows them in their traditional dress - the clothing of a hard working woman.

I was amazed with the Naxi alphabet. It is a pictorial alphabet (the words resemble the thing they are describing). Of course Chinese is pictorial too from an ancient perspective, as obvious in such characters as 'center' and 'person'. But the Naxi is more like drawing little figures.
Unfortunately, I do not have any photos of it, but you will see it. The streets signs in Lijiang's new town are written in Mandarin, Mandarin in Roman letters, and Naxi.
And be certain to try and learn some of it, as the Naxi alphabet is an art in itself.

Lijiang is home to one of the many non-chinese people in Yunnan province. There are many traditional "naxi" locals dressed in the traditional dress code. They seem to be real shy with the camera though.

If you walk around some of the back streets and alleyways you'll probably notice buildings with a more rustic feel like this one where you can clearly see is built from mud bricks.

Not so much here, though you see some of it, is smoking through large, bamboo water pipes. There are so many people who smoke in China (about 2/3 of the men) at least some use older methods!

They will see a very different Lijiang when they grow up. Just hope that some of its charms still remain as massive redevelopment are currentlytaking place.
