Waterways seem to be the thing in this neck of the woods. They are used for washing clothes and food, and, though they are relatively clean with little garbage, they still have a lot of algae and fish. I don't recommend drinking from them, but they're nice to look at.

The Third Pond

The three ponds at the water source exist for a reason, and people today still follow and obey. The first pond, closest to the source is for drinking water, the second for food-washing water and the third for clothes-washing water. This order keeps the drinking water clean.

The biggest thing to do in Lijiang aside from shopping is walking the old streets. They can get slippery when wet so be careful, but it's quite a pretty town. As I mentioned elsewhere, get up early!

Much like Lijiang, Shuhe has waterways that run through town. As in Lijiang, there are three pools at the source, the first for drinking, the second for washing food and the third for washing clothes.

The Glass Window

Inside Shuhe there is a Tibetan monastery, though supposedly you're only allowed in part of it- I guess unless you're part of a tour or something... pretty lame. Whatever the case, the endless stretch of prayer wheels sits in front of an odd scene- a glass window with chairs in it that look out on the courtyard- maybe for drinking tea, maybe for massage, I don't know. Anyway, they have decent bathrooms!

Shuhe's Entryway

Shuhe should be labeled as a tourist trap, as it just has the feeling of a town purpose-built for tourists... shops selling souvenirs much the same as you find in Lijiang and Baisha just don't feel like they are part of an existing town, so much as they feel like they, and the town around them, were built for the point and purpose of raking in tourist dollars. You can get a giude at the door, but don't waste your money.

Expensive frescos

Supposedly this area is famous for its frescos. The one place we went to see them charged 30 yuan to get in, but there is another fee that they charged which is like a "cultural area fee"... you can pay it anywhere and it supposedly supports the locals, though they honestly get enough money from selling souvenirs or renting land to Chinese souvenir vendors/businesses that they probably don't need it. However, no other place we went to demanded this 80 yuan, so we decided not to go in... they wouldn't let us in unless we had that piece of paper. Anyway, be prepared, especially if you go to the monastery near Baisha, for them to ask for the paper or the 80 yuan (May 2008) that it costs.

Baisha is a neat little village that has been transformed into a tourist town as far as souvenir-buying is concerned. It's somewhat sad, but it's still worth a visit, just don't expect that what you buy is really real Naxi goods. I've seen many of the same things billed at Yao goods and Xi'Anese goods and so on...

Baisha is a short drive from Lijiang- you can arrange a driver through your hotel or catch a bus (ask around). There are many places to eat as well.

Wangu Tower View

There is a nice 360 degree view from the tower, and despite the no smoking signs, the guy working the souvenir shop still does. He's not too interested in selling, anyway, the TV taking much of his attention- not at all unusual in Lijiang. If you do go, go early- the tour groups started to arrive at 8:35 am, right on schedule. You can give a donation at the base of the tower, but it seems a bit absurd since you pay to get in.
Supposedly this Wanggu Lou/ Wangu Tower/ Looking at the Past Pavillion cost one million yuan to build, using old-growth lumber... no end to the destruction of the environment here. But it makes money!
