• We decided that we would wing it and try and do it ourselves. Mindful of other advice we walked out of the Old Town and along to catch the Number 7. The sign for the bus itself is not along the main road but in a laneway. There is a sign for it but if you are not looking for the sign itself you might miss it as we did. I have included a photograph of the sign. We were the only passengers – halfway there we were transferred into a smaller mini bus which was a little concerning but, we did get there. Make sure that you ask to be dropped off at the booking/ticket office NOT the tourist office.

•Buy at the ticket office to the east of the Old City (entry to the east of the Old Town Management Board Tourism Service point). Much much cheaper. We were able to buy tickets for Chengdu for 510 Yuan cash.

Cross-Country Club of Lijiang can help you arrange trips from Lijiang to any point in Yunnan. They also organize hikes around Lijiang.
We went on a 2-day trip to Zhongdian and we paid Y600 per person (4 people in one van). Price includes transportation, accomodation in Zhongdian old town and entrance fees.

Beautiful scenery abounds outside Lijiang on the way to Tiger Leaping Gorge. It's a nice, 3-4 hour drive, along winding roads. Set up a car and driver through your hotel. We had a taxi car, though you might get one of the mini buses, depending on your group size.
It cost us 400 yuan for the drive (hotel to Middle Gorge and back) as well as 50 yuan for the entrance fee.

If you want to get to Tiger Leaping Gorge fro Lijiang, you can arrange a driver with your hotel. The driver can take you to the main parking lot, but I believe only specific drivers are allowed farther into the gorge, so you'll have to arrange one there- or your driver can. It's a rough road. Waterfalls are common -especially in a few places- but can make passage difficult during the wet season. We didn't drive too far into the gorge due to time constraints, but I don't think it gets better as you go in.
Watch for falling rocks and mud...

At the entrance of Lijiang, where the water mills are , we hired a taxi to make two trips. We made a deal with a girl who spoke little English, and after reaching agreement she took us to a side street where her husband it was waiting.
Everything went well, the only thing is that when we went to the Tiger Leap Gorge, rather than go by the good road , where all traffic it was going he took a secondary road on the other side of the river that was very bad and lonely and we became worried . We were not able to explain anything because the driver was alone and he did not speak any English so we supposed that he had not licence to transport tourists
Visit to Baisha and other temples around 120 Yuan
Visit to Tiger Leap Gorge 1 180 Yuan

It costs us RMB7 to get to the Bus Station from Lijiang Ancient City, RMB24 (per pax) for the bus fare to go from Lijiang to Qiaotou station and then RMB80 per car (transfer from Sean's Guesthouse) from Qiaotou to Tiger Leaping Gorge. Entrance Fee is RMB50 per pax.
On the way back, we paid another RMB80 per car from Sean's Huesthouse to Qiaotou and RMB25 (per pax) from Qiaotou back Lijiang. Another RMB7 from bus station to Lijiang Ancient City.
A few things for you to take note:
1) There is no such thing as "No smoking" bus!!!!! I was almost suffocated to death during the 3 hours journey back from Qiaotou to Lijiang
2) There is no Qiaotou "station"... it is just an open area with no ticketing counter for you to buy bus tickets. Ask the locals to help look out for the buses coming down from Zhongdian
3) You can only buy single way tickets... seem that bus schedules are only confirmed the day before, in the afternoon.
4) You can buy tickets at both Yu He Bus Station and Lijiang Bus Station but... you can only board the bus at Lijiang Bus Station
5) If you travelling in a group of 4 or 5, you can consider booking one of those cars in photo 3... I think it costs about RMB150 per car

If you intend to do the tiger leaping gorge, then go to qiaotou. It's the more popular starting point compared to da ju.
Ask your hotel owner to scribble down qiao tou (bridge head) and express bus stop for you on a piece of paper. Hand the instructions to the cab driver.
Alternatively if you speak Mandarin, just tell the driver you're heading for the bus stop to Qiao Tou.

I had a perilous time flying to Lijiang on China Eastern Airline from Kunming. While the plane and service was ok, we experience turbulence over a really mountaineous region. The wind sheer was so bad, the plane had to turn back to Kunming.
While they made the announcement, everybody pretended to howl in protest and then laugh in shaky relief. We ended up waiting on the tarmac for close to an hour.
We finally arrived 3 hours later. A little shaken but generally ok.
You can book your tickets online here->http://english.flights.ctrip.com.

The cabbies here are, on the whole, honest. They never gave us as much grief as the ones in Hanoi did! We did not encounter any unpleasant cabbies at all. Instead, we were charged according to the meter and the receipt shows a breakdown of the distance and price. The starting fare is also a lot cheaper compared to cities like Shanghai and Shen Zhen
