The street food was great everywhere I went in Yunnan. Mangshi was no exception. Here, however, the food was not as obviously Chinese as I'd become accustomed to in Kunming. The influence of Vietnam and Myanmar is visible. Everything tasted more pungent too.
One thing that surprised me was the great number of dairy places, where shopkeepers thrived selling yogurts, of all things!
It's very hot in that area and you can quench your thirst at every corner with delicious juices, ice coffee and tea, and freshly cut fruits. I saw a Chinese woman set up her low bench and a large basket covered with a clean white cloth, on the sidewalk. Right away, women brought their babies over and bought a bowl of blanc-mange, and I couldn't resist trying it. Very cool, mild tasting, and refreshing.
