1)Catch the bus leaving from Lijiang (8am) / Shangri-la (9am) and arrive at Qiaotou at around lunch time. There's also an afternoon bus (2.30pm) available but I won't advise it since daylight will recede by the time you arrive in Qiaotou.

2)Take your lunch in Qiaotou ( i recommend the hearty beef stew behind jade dragon hotel, away from all the touristy restaurants up front)

3)Trek for 6 torturous hours as you ascend a miserly 900m. Relish in your sadism and admire the scenary as you rest along the guesthouses along the way. Breathe deep before you You encounter the infamous 28 bends. Along the way you will swear never to do this again...

4)Stay overnight at the Tea-horse Guest House.

5)Set off from the guest house to Teacher Zhang's . Eat your lunch and Hike to Visit the Middle Rapids.

6)You will encounter a sheer verticle ascent after reaching the bottom. At one point, you'll have to climb a creaky steel ladder. The locals call this the Dangerous ladder.

7)Arrive at Tina's Guesthouse and hitch a ride back to Qiaotou.

There are now 2 routes from Qiaotou into Tiger Leaping Gorge - the high trail that sadists prefer or the low vehicular road that accomodates tourist buses and vans.

Low Road - Possible to hire a bread van* to travel from Qiaotou to the Mid-Point of Tiger Leaping Gorge ( Tina's Guesthouse )

High Trail - Walk along the main road following the ticket booth to the school. At about 300m, you will find the 194milestone marker beside the road. Turn left and follow the sign for the High Trail. The high trail is far above the low road and offers spectacular views of the Gorge. However, it is physically punishing, even for a marathoner like myself.

*That's what private vehicles for rental here are called. It's shaped like a loaf of bread.

Personal Account: While it's all too tempting to take a van to see the Gorge, you'll be missing out on what has been described as the best hike in China ( Rough Guide : China )

Welcome to my Tiger Leaping Gorge (HuTiaoXia) Page. This is probably the first page in VT dedicated solely to the Gorge and its primary aim is to consolidate all the information available to help all backpackers. Much has been said about this place and many have raved about its beauty but only one fact remains, to truly appreciate Tiger Leaping Gorge, you need to experience the hike yourself!

There are 2 ways to go to Tiger Leaping Gorge.

1)Via Qiaotou
This is by far the most popular backpacker's choice

2)Via DaJu
Choose this route if you're enroute to Shangri-la from Lijiang.
