Get to the gorge before 7am, when the gatekeeper arrives and will charge you RMB 30 entrance fee. While Yulong Xueshan (Jade Dragon Mtn.) is gorgeous, it is commercialized with overpriced chairlifts.
Fun Alternatives: Instead, try Haba Peak.
If you get lost, follow the yellow arrows painted by previous trekkers, should lead you to Walnut Grove (Bzzr gardens)

this is one of the sites in dali that a lot of tours will include.. it is supposedly the movie set of a very famous story set in ancient china.. however there's really not much there.. it's a whole place is filled with lots made-for-tourist stuff.. buildings built to look like ancient china.. sale of all sorts of 'local porduce' at exorbitant prices.. there's also a very corny performance to entertain tourists at the end..
Unique Suggestions: climb to the top of the entrance gate.. at least you get a nice view of the surrounding fr there..
Fun Alternatives: spend more time strolling around the dali old town or the city of the three pagodas of chong sheng temple.. they are a lot more pleasant.. :)

The gourd flute, properly called hulusi, is an instrument native to Yunnan. No matter how many people are trying to sell you one, always remember to buy nothing but the best, or you'd end up accumulating a load of those things on your return journey. Best places to buy them would be the old towns in Dali and Lijiang
