The Bearnaise style architcture is really striking in the area to the north of Wuluohe...actually it's probably closer to Luoping.
The French had considerable influence in the Red River valley at the beginning of the 2oth Century. Is it possible that this style of architecture came with them, or did it develop indigenously?
Oh and note the palm that manages to survive here despite the altitude!
A string of roadside cafes and restaurants in each village here provides simple food, and when you order something they run outside and buy the vegetables from the vendors outside on the street. Now that's fresh!
The road from Datong all the way south to Qiubei was being renewed inearly 2004, but this looked like it was going to take a long time to finish.
These roadworks can lead to major delays (upwards of 2 hours at a time) so be prepared for journeys to last much longer than it might look on the map!
Favorite thing: This links to a general topographical map of the Wuluohe area. the big escarpment is the edge of the darker brown above the town. As always, the location of the town is shown at the geographical centre of the township rather than the town itself, which is on the main north-sout road to the east of where shown.
