There are many small towns scattered about the area, not necessarily worth a visit, though you'll drive through some of them, but that look quite picturesque among the terraces. This one got hit up in Photoshop...

You don't need to hit the tourist spots to see terraces. They're all around you near Xinjie. You'll pass them enroute to the other ones and you might even find better images at these places. While the sunrise/sunset viewing may not be as good, there are no touts.

You might catch a few, small waterfalls as well- just used to deliver water from one terrace to another, lower terrace.

As with many cities, a cheap, easy way to get off the beaten path is just to wander around the city, getting away from the tourist sites...
