    Paying Respect on Hefang Jie

If you can get past the historical contradiction of a "newly renovated" market area with Qing Dynasty style archetecture and "Southern Song Dynasty charm" then please visit the Qinghefang Neighborhood of Hangzhou. There are many little shops here that preserve traditional art and business practices. You can bargain for good deals on paintings, silk products, animal horn combs and guasha tools, embroidery, etc. If you want a good meal, there are some fine restaurants in this neighboorhood. There are also some street food vendors for a smaller snack. You can have traditionally-prepared tea in a teahouse here and visit old stores or an herb museum. Not everything here comes at a good price, though, so bargain smartly.

    Lovely building!
    by hangzhoulover
The Huqingyutang herb museum (zhongyao bowuguan) is a great and affordable attraction (Entrance Fee: 5 RMB) in the QingHeFang neighborhood (old-style "Chinatown" area) of Hangzhou.

This museum used to be a traditional Chinese medicine factory, set up by the famous businessman Hu Xueyan during the Qing Dynasty in 1878. He was well known for his honesty in business matters, and the motto of the factory was "there is no second price," meaning that they would not lower the quality of their medicine in order to attract customers with a cheaper price. This honesty built up a trustworthy brandname.

Today, you can still buy your typical patent medications, plasters, and loose herb formulas. They also have beautiful herb wines on display.

In addition, you can go into the museum behind the shop and read (in English too) about the history of Chinese herbal medicine, see live herbs growing, see dried and prepared herbal products, see artwork of famous TCM doctors, etc. This is a must-see for students of TCM, but fans of Chinese archetecture will also enjoy the museum, with its grand entrance hall and central garden area.

Hangzhou is famous not only for the West Lake, but also for the dragon well tea(Long Jing Cha). Tea Culture is very dominant. Tea house is everywhere in the city. I advice the town of Meijiawu for your must visit if you are interested in the tea culture.
Meijiawu Town is located in the southwest suburb of Hangzhou, 20 to 30 minutes by taxi, surrounded by greenly covered hill, tea tree planted on the terrace makes a very beautiful view. wonderful!, you can drink tea in the open area and enjoy the beautiful rural scenery. After drinking tea, you can climb the hill and merged yourself in the dense tea trees on terrace. it's a very interesting and wonderful experience you'll never forget!!!

The northern peak sits behind Lingyin Si, and offers the best views over the lake and city.

There is a cable-car that takes you to the summit for Y20, and the views make this fee completely worth it (on a clear day!!). Although inevitably, as seems a trademark of Chinese cities, you will notice a thick cloud of smog hovering above the distant city on the horizon....... this is why you also need a clear day, to see anything!!

There is a small cafe and a viewing platform on two levels at the top, offering plenty of space to sit and take in the sweeping views.

  • Directions: To get to the cable-car station and ticket office, its just a short walk up the road from the entrance to Lingyin Si. The scenic journey to the top of the Peak takes around 10 minutes.

Lingyin temple was once the largest Buddhist temple in China, and still it is important for the Buddhists in China and thus also very famous in China. This spot has a long history of temples, dating as far back as the Jin Dynasty (300-400 AD), and at its most influential housed a community of around 3000 monks. Nowadays it is a protected site and also a tourist attraction, but is also in religious use. The area is vast, and there is a fair amount of monuments to see too, and some caves too.

There are rock carvings of the Laughing Buddha (you know the one with the happy face and the big belly) and other Buddhas and Buddhist deities. You will know where to go, as everybody else is going that way. The area is very lush, and for those so inclined, a bit of mountain hiking is possible. The Chinese love climbing their mountains, and there are a lot of them on the steep hillside paths you will hardly see any Westerners.

The Lingyin temple itself consists of seven temples, symbolising the ascent into enlightenment. Symbolically, you also have to walk quite a few steps to get to the top, but it really is worth it, as the top temple houses wonderful deities and has a beautiful view.

There is also a locally famous mountain close by called Fei Lai Feng "The Mountain that Flew from Afar", so called because and Indian Buddhist monk visiting the temple about 1000 years ago, thought the peak reminded him of a mountain back home.

The Lingyin area receives a lot of tourists on almost any given day (school and unit outings during the week, tourist groups mostly during weekends and holidays), and so there are signs on how to behave respectfully. One thing it did not say, but which was pointed out to me once, was that you should not step on the doorstep when entering the temples.

Also it is a good idea to try to get there reasonably early (before lunch) to avoid the biggest crowds. But as many people move around in groups, try to avoid the "congested areas" and you'll be fine.

The famous Dragon Well Tea - LongJing Tea comes from Hangzhou.

Dragon Well Green Tea suppose to help in lowering Cholesterol and Diabeties. You have to store the green tea in a cool and dry place in an air-tight container.

Meijiawu Long Jing has very light nutty aroma but made up for it with its very smooth and delicate taste and a pleasant flowery aftertaste. This tea is recommended to tea drinkers who prefer light and delicate flavored tea.

A bottle of green tea will cost 230 yuan (Gu niang Cha).

They have sales talk which teach you how to identify the tea leaves.

There are many lake called "west lake", but the West Lake of Hangzhou is the most famous one. In ancient China, the West Lake was the most likely eulogized lake by many famous poets. The West Lake is compared to "Beautiful woman","bright eyes of Hangzhou" by the poets.

    One of the 3 Islands...
    by Sobe-A-Rush
Takes about 3 hours all together to see all the 3 islands. The boat to go around all the islands costs 30-40RMB. Short little boat ride to the first Island, you get off walk around do what you want to do. There is many people selling cool little things on the islands. The 2nd island is the bigger one and you can spend about an hour there, get pics etc. You can spend as much time as you want at each island and the ships run between all the islands all day. You can also go pack to downtown Hangzhou at what ever time you want and which ever island you want to go back from. Boats run every 5-15mins. Dont go during a chinese holiday because it will be really packed.

  • You MUST NOT leave Hangzhou without taking a boat trip on the lake. Its pretty hard to miss the lake, as it is everwhere. With small gardens, islands and charming little walkways and tea houses all around, west lake remains a paradise waiting to be explored.

I recommend you begin your trip on the old section of west lake, with a full day boat. The boat will take you to the two islands on the lake. This is an unhurried, at your own pace trip.

You take a ticket, get one a boad and go off to the first island. There, you can look around, explore and then catch any boat to the next island. You can take any boat, as long as you have the ticket. Pretty cool!

Take the day to enjoy the ride. you have have a nice picnic and relax away. This is typical hangzhou life, relax and unhurried.
