Taking the small ferry to Putuo Shan was very crowded, cramped and uncomfortable. The boat sat low in the water and it seemed on the verge of being swamped by some of the larger waves. The return trip from Putuo Shan was on the larger ferry which was slower by a half hour but being larger was less cramped and more comfortable in spite of it still being full. As well, the price of the return trip on the larger ferry was cheaper than that of the smaller ferry. The only disadvantage of the larger ferry was that the crossing time is a half hour longer but with all the other considerations, the larger ferry is the only way to go to Putuo Shan by sea. A closing comment: The reason the return trip was on the larger ferry was because winds had made the size of the waves too large so that the smaller ferry was cancelled for the day of return. If not for this, we would have returned on the smaller ferry and never experienced the better alternative of the larger ferry.
