Located at the mouth of the small alley that our hostel (Shaoxing New Hostel) is located on, this is a very affordable place to eat at. The restaurant serves Hunan-style dishes, so make sure you're prepared for the spiciness!
The most striking point about the restaurant is probably the decor and the uniform of the servers. The staff are clad in Red Guard uniforms and there's kitschy artwork on the walls of the restaurant. The food doesn't disappoint, so don't mistakenly think that the restaurant is only about appearances.

This is a small restaurant offering local cuisine, on Cangqiao old street. The portions are a tad small and thus not very good value-for-money, but if you're dining alone or in a very small group, don't mind the expense and prefer to taste a wider variety of dishes, then this place will do.
Favorite Dish: The usual mainstays of Shaoxing cuisine, stinky tofu (chou4 dou4 fu0) and fatty pork with preserved vegetables (mei2 gan1 cai4 kou4 rou4), would be fine.

Don't be put off by the fact that this is in Shaoxing's best 5-star hotel. The dishes are tasty and authentic, and the environment is certainly very hygienic especially in comparison with the multitude of Xianheng Restaurants around the Lu Xun street. Outside the restaurant entrance there's a small pond with a couple of wupeng boats.
Favorite Dish: Stinky tofu (chou4 dou4 fu0) and fatty pork with preserved vegetables (mei2 gan1 cai4 kou4 rou4) are two of the most popular local dishes here, you won't go wrong ordering those. I would also recommend adding a dish of tender beef fillet strips (piao1 xiang1 niu2 liu3) to the lot.
Also I found the Shaoxing yellow wine that we ordered along with dinner to taste much better than the stuff on offer at roadside stalls. If there's ONE splurge in Shaoxing, I would strongly recommend the dinner and yellow wine here!

This restaurant was mentioned in one of Lu Xun's very popular novels.
And the most famous dishes are: Hui Xiang Dou, Mei Gan Cai, Chou Dou Fu (bean-curd)
However, my experience was not so good: the taste of those dishes was just average.
Favorite Dish: no favorite dish
