This tip is for anyone travelling through or stopping in mainland Australia after visiting Cocos Islands.
As the Island's name suggests, coconuts are in abundance here and can be an inexpensive souviner to take home to Australia, however Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) advised the following:
A maximum of 10 coconuts can be brought into Australia, however they must all be dehusked. Declare them on your AQIS form and you wont have any problem when AQIS inspects them.
The local kids have got dehusking of coconuts down to a fine art and will rapidly process your coconuts in exchange for some pocket money.
It's well worth the effort because the nuts from these ring of islands seem to be sweeter and have more flesh in them - bon apertite!
