Around Laileu by Yiannis2000 There is a main bus station for travel to the major town in the East of the island, BAUCAU (3hrs) and LOS PALOS (6-7 hrs), and two small ones for destinations in the south, AILEU(1 hr), MAUBISSE (2-3 hrs), AINARO(hrs), SAME and SUAI, or destinations to the West, towards the border to Indonesia. Prices and service are very low... For few days' trips consider hiring a truck with a driver, for daytrips taxis are good. Prices to those two last options are reasonable again, after the departure of the majority of U.N. personel. People from abroad tend to hike with the International Forces vehicles around the island, i avoid it... Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Taxi is the easiest way to get around Dili... There are lots of taxis allways looking for a customer, and they are very annoying as they horn each time they see a malai (foreigners) walking... The usual is that they ask higher prices, but keep this in mind as it's very helpful: - for itiniraries within the city $1 is enough, although if you discuss the price you can get it for 50 cent... -for itineraries outside city limits, like Praia do Cristo Rei and airport, $2 is considered right - to go to the Praia da Areia Branca $1,50 is OK NOTE: Allways make sure to arrange the price before the travel begins If you find a nice and reliable driver, anf if he's got a mobile phone, you can allways keep his phone number so that he'll pick you up when you need, just by making a phone call... This is very practical, especially when you go to the beach, because many taxi drivers tell you that they'll pick you up at the agreed time, but fail to appear... If you are staying a long time in Dili, think about buying a bike. This way you have a bit of freedom of movement... And as Dili is on a plain, you don't need to be ain a very good shape... Besides, going to the Cristo Rei beach and returning to Dili at sunset was one of my best experiences in East Timor. The problem of "biking" around is the traffic, be very careful especially in crossroads and in curves... Leave a Comment Theme: Bicycle

Mikrolet is the cheapest way to get around. For as little as 10 cent you can travel around town. There are some lines like 01, 03, 10 with a defined path. They stop everywhere, when they see a possible client, as there aren't any stops... They are little vans very coloured and with paintings. And in a normal country they would take around 7 people. But in East Timor I've seen them carry more than 20 people... Whith the music banging in your ears all the way... It's something everyone should try while in East Timor ;-) PS: To make it stop you must make a sound hitting with a coin in a metallic surface... Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Dili's Catholic Church-East Timor by Groverdean The Church is enormous and is clearly visible when flying into the airport. The church plays an important part in East TImor. At Castel Gandalfo Sept. 13, a visibly moved Pope John Paul II received Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo of Dili, the capital of East Timor. Belo, the 1996 Nobel Peace laureate, fled East Timor after militias attacked his residence where some 6,000 people had taken refuge. He said armed men killed 25 people and destroyed a portion of the church in what was part of 'a direct attack" on the Catholic church. Belo estimated that militias have killed 10,000 people, sent 100,000 fleeing into the mountains and forests and deported 80,000 to West Timor. I was told the church was left intact during the violence of 1999. Leave a Comment Directions: cant miss it just before the central area

The National Stadium of East Timor-Dili by Groverdean It is interesting to have a walk around the stadium to see the many Demokrasy murals on its walls. They were painted after 1999, and yet all have been defaced. The Stadium plays hosts to soccer games most weekends. I was told that Portugal played Brazil here after Independence. I was amazed I hadn't heard anything about it in the Australia media. When I queried it later in my stay it was a clash of the Portuguese and Brazilian Peacekeepers! The Ever Popular Portuguese Embassy in Dili by Groverdean This is a popular place, with always a crowd gathering of locals looking for a future elsewhere. East Timor was a Portuguese colony for several hundreds of years until 1975 when they pulled out. The Australian Embassy in Dili-East Timor by Groverdean Probably the most impressive building in Dili, and as a reminder, can sometimes make you feel a little uncomfortable about the role Australia has in East Timor. However, East Timor is now the closest country to Australia so it is extremely important to our interests. Australia will probably always come under criticism, yet, after visiting East Timor it was clear that the press we recieve in Australia and the world media, does not represent anything like the political reality in East Timor. Nothing news in that for me! Xanana Gusmao Reading Room-Dili-East Timor by Groverdean The Reading Room is a good place to start your trip in East Timor. Even if you are fully aware of the country's recent history, it will refresh your memory, and re-inforce the difficulties the East TImorese have had to deal with in recent times. The Reading Room does house alot of Xanana Gusmao paraphernalia, however, there is also a room for viewing the Reading Room's extensive library of historical Video Cassettes, many documentaries filmed by various Worldwide TV Networks over the years. Also provided is a book library, as well as a souvenir stall, which sells amongst other East TImorese objects, postcards, and T-Shirts. The Reading Room was set up and is financed by the Sydney City Council. Leave a Comment Address: Rua Belarmino Lobo, LeciderePhone: +670 3313 053Other Contact: xgrroom@mail.timortelecom.tp
