The Second Largest Statue of Christ in the World by Groverdean About 15-20 minutes drive to the east of Dili is the second largest statue of Christ, in the world! It is a reminder of one of the reasons why East Timor struggled as a Christian region under the Muslim Indonesians. Strangely enough the Statue was donated by the then President Suharto, as a gift to the "Liberated Folk of East Timor". The Statue stands at 27metres high marking it as the then 27th province of Indonesia. It takes about 15 mins to walk to the top. Best time to do this is at sunrise or sunset as the heat of the day means you will sweat an awful lot. Leave a Comment

It's really fun to stroll around thismarket, where you can find pretty much everything... From 2nd hand clothes to meat, passing by all the vegetables there are in ET... It's really worth the visit... To make it a more unique experience, in the return take a mikrolet, the 8 is very good choice if you live in the area of the Government Palace, Kolmera or Vila Verde. Hindu Temple by heliopinto Tis temple built by the indonesian is now a bit abandoned, but it's still worth the visit... Remember ET is a country with around 99% catholic... So a Hindhu temple here is a bit strange... It's located near the Taibessi Market Leave a Comment

Empty harbour of Dili by extrajoce A petrol tanker and a wooden pinisi were pretty much all there was to see weeks before the referendum. The passage of our PELNI boat and the presence of UN cars was pretty much the only animation - calm before the unleashed violence following the vote for independence. Leave a Comment

Empty harbour of Dili by extrajoce It is hard to believe this is the capital of the new nation. There is hardly anything, and this was before a lot was destroyed by the Indonesian army which was controlling the territory it had annexed forcefully. Leave a Comment

by theo1006 When we were driving up the road from Dili to Aileu and Maubisse our driver stopped at a vantage point to show us the official residence of Timor Leste's president. Used mainly for representative purposes, because Ramos Horta has a private home which he prefers. What our driver did not say, was that this same mansion was once the residence of "the most hated man in East Timor" (as Groverdean puts it), viz. the Indonesian administrator. And that it was throughly destroyed on the eve of Timor-Leste's independence, see Groverdean's picture.

Ramos Horta's home on Robert E. Kennedy Boulevard by theo1006, 2 more photos The president's official residence is only for representative purposes. President Ramos-Horta lives in a private home built in traditional style. This reminded us of Ho Chi-Minh who also had a traditional house built for himself, which is now a pilgrimage site in Hanoi. The house lies on a turnoff from the road to Christo Rei. The turnoff is guarded by both Timor-Leste and UN military. When they have convinced themselves that you are innocent tourists, they let you through. When we were talking to the guards at the house, the president's brother came out and invited us for a cup of coffee!
