It is interesting to have a walk around the stadium to see the many Demokrasy murals on its walls. They were painted after 1999, and yet all have been defaced.
The Stadium plays hosts to soccer games most weekends.
I was told that Portugal played Brazil here after Independence. I was amazed I hadn't heard anything about it in the Australia media. When I queried it later in my stay it was a clash of the Portuguese and Brazilian Peacekeepers!

The Main Catholic Church in Dili

The Church is enormous and is clearly visible when flying into the airport.
The church plays an important part in East TImor.
At Castel Gandalfo Sept. 13, a visibly moved Pope John Paul II received Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo of Dili, the capital of East Timor. Belo, the 1996 Nobel Peace laureate, fled East Timor after militias attacked his residence where some 6,000 people had taken refuge. He said armed men killed 25 people and destroyed a portion of the church in what was part of 'a direct attack" on the Catholic church.
Belo estimated that militias have killed 10,000 people, sent 100,000 fleeing into the mountains and forests and deported 80,000 to West Timor.
I was told the church was left intact during the violence of 1999.

This is a popular place, with always a crowd gathering of locals looking for a future elsewhere.
East Timor was a Portuguese colony for several hundreds of years until 1975 when they pulled out.

Probably the most impressive building in Dili, and as a reminder, can sometimes make you feel a little uncomfortable about the role Australia has in East Timor. However, East Timor is now the closest country to Australia so it is extremely important to our interests. Australia will probably always come under criticism, yet, after visiting East Timor it was clear that the press we recieve in Australia and the world media, does not represent anything like the political reality in East Timor. Nothing news in that for me!

    by Groverdean
The Reading Room is a good place to start your trip in East Timor. Even if you are fully aware of the country's recent history, it will refresh your memory, and re-inforce the difficulties the East TImorese have had to deal with in recent times.
The Reading Room does house alot of Xanana Gusmao paraphernalia, however, there is also a room for viewing the Reading Room's extensive library of historical Video Cassettes, many documentaries filmed by various Worldwide TV Networks over the years. Also provided is a book library, as well as a souvenir stall, which sells amongst other East TImorese objects, postcards, and T-Shirts.
The Reading Room was set up and is financed by the Sydney City Council.

  • The place of the Santa Cruz Massacre in November 12, 1991. Here died many timorese that day, victims of the indonesian military's brutality.
Even if the place in itself it's not that interesting, it's significance makes it a place worth the visit...

  • It's the old residence of the former portuguese governor. It's a nice building that was destroyed in the 1999 violence, but it's now under reconstruction. In the future will be the official residence of the Timorese President.
It has a splendid view over the city and the bay...

This church was built by the portuguese in the colonial period. It was here that started the conflicts that led to the Massacre of Santa Cruz Cemetary, in which an uncertain number of timorese died during a peaceful demonstration against the indonesian occupying forces.
