So here I am at the Airport in East Timor! by Groverdean You have two options by plane. Flying Merparti Nusantara Airlines from Bali, and AirNorth (a Qantas subsidiary), from Darwin. I've done both. Both flights take about 1.5 hours. The Merparti flight is in a jet, the Air North flight is a smaller, 30 seater aircraft. Approximate cost is about 500AUD return from Darwin on AirNorth (see website below). Merparti from Bali is approximately 400USD return. Why so expensive? While the UN is there, and various NGO', etc, the airlines are reaping the benefits, and charging accordingly. If you have the time and patience a cheaper option is to fly from Bali to Kupang in West Timor than 1 day overland to East TImor. Bali Kupang return costs about 80USD. Be aware however, that the foriegn office advises against travel in the border region of East and West Timor. Although all travellers I met who had done this encountered no problems, it's just a long tiring bus trip. Leave a Comment

Mikrolet with "Tout" looking for our business-Dili by Groverdean I wouldn't call them a bus. It's a van, that can get awfully crowded with baggage, chickens, and of course humans! Watch out for the guy hanging onto the side of the Mikrolet touting for your business! They are a cheap way of getting around most cities and towns. Just be aware that sometimes it is difficult to communicate where you are going. Taxis as an option still only cost a few USD to get you anywhere around town. However, in alot of out of the way places, (most of East Timor), they will be your only option other than walking, or driving your own car. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Dili Airport by bkoon When we were organising the trip, we realised that connections were few and infrequent. As we departed from Singapore, the only way we could get there is via Bali where we caught on to a Mertapi flight to Dili. The airport itself is very basic and I still ses the UN Officers at the airport. Well, there are many UN choppers and planes at the small airport. curtiscj Sat Apr 1, 2006 10:58 MYT Another way to fly to Dili is through Darwin (Australia). Dili is only one and a half hours flight by AirNorth (Qantas). Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

To get to Atauro Island, the only way is by boat/ferry. When I was there, I travelled on the KMP Sereia do Mar, a ferry from Indonesia to Atauro Island. The ferry ride was very comfortable as it has an air-conditioned cabin on the 2nd deck (get into the air-con cabin only after your ticket stubs have been torn). Your belongings (if is just a backpack, you can just bring along with you) can be placed in Deck 1. The normal price for a one-way ticket is USD7. It is not very frequent (twice a week to and fro). The way most East Timorese seem to travel around! by Groverdean This seems to be the most common way of getting around between towns apart from regular bus services which operate between all main towns. You will see trucks loaded down with a small town of people camped all over each vehicle! This way is best left to the locals. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Dodging Taxis in Downtown Dili-East Timor by Groverdean When we drove around we did have a driver with a car so that helped alot. We payed 60USD for the car and driver each day. Our car was a small 4WD. Didnt include fuel so on average with the amount of driving we did fuel was 15-20USD a day. You can pay cheaper than this for a taxi to drive you around all day or just anyone with a car, expect to pay about 60USD (fuel included) as the absolute cheapest. If you hire a car yourself you will only pay about 20USD a day, However, the road signage is limited and the roads can be a bit tricky at times. You may end up missing out of the fantastic scenery as well! Apart from the roughness of the roads there are plenty of animals to avoid and you pay a "Fee" if you kill any. The "Fee" is considerably more for foreigners. Speed limits are 30 kph in Dili and range up to 50-60 kph on the open road. Still quite slow by western standards, but difficult to achieve at times given the standard of the roads. Hardly any of the locals speak English. If you know some Portuguese that'll help. My driver spoke a bit of English and was good value. The Manager of the Dili Guest House helped me with the car and driver- who's name was Eddy, and is pictured under the People tip. If you want to call John (The manager of the Dili Guest House) he speaks broken English. His number is below. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor HomePhone: 7235754/7235755

Hire a kijang for a longer trip by Yiannis2000 ...but do u mind??? Roads from the capital DILI to the south, Maubisse, Ainaro and Same, or to the east, Baucau, Laga and Los Palos are no good, but generally paved. There are some local busses, departing from the three "bus stations", another alternative is to hire a local truck for a few days' trip! Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Timor by Yiannis2000 U may fly to the capital Dili from Denpasar, Bali/ Indonesia or from Darwin, N. territory, Australia. Coming from Europe I normally choose the first option. No safe, reliable boat connection to the island. Buy the airfare locally. When in Bali, I used Arowana travel agency. For Civil Aviation rules and regulations you can download here . The most efficient way to get around Timor Leste is to drive yourself around. The locals get around on motorcycles or squash onto truck and buses that serve as public transport. When I say squash, I MEAN SQUASH. Do yourself a favour and drive. Theme: Car/Motor Home
