Cafe by the pier in Cheung Chau

I went into this small cafe (the name of which I never discovered) for a snack and a drink before catching a boat back to Central Hong Kong.

Located on the seafront, just a couple of minutes from the ferry pier, this simple establishment had no English-language signs displaying its name.

At the time of my visit in January 2006, the staff were in the process of putting up decorations for the impending Chinese New Year celebrations.

The choice of food was typical cafe fare - sandwiches, toast, ice creams and cake - and there was an extensive choice of soft drinks, milkshakes, smoothies and hot beverages.

Favorite Dish: I opted for:

Peanut butter on toast - Cost: 8 HKD

Really thick (2 inches) slices of toast with peanut butter topping.

Large chocolate milkshake - Cost: 18 HKD

A chocolate milkshake containing blended wafers and served with lots of ice.

Although the combined total of the two above items amounts to 26 HKD, the waitress only asked (via a calculator display screen) for 21 HKD.

A friendly little cafe close to the ferry pier on Cheung Chau island.

East Lake Restaurant: Laid back restaurant near the beach!

East Lake Restaurant, Cheung Chau

East Lake Restaurant is a no-frills restaurant on the Hong Kong island of Cheung Chau. It is located about halfway along Tung Wan Road, with the beach a 5 minute walk in one direction and the ferry pier a 5 minute walk in the other direction.

The extensive menu includes a vast selection of curries and stir frys and the menu is split into the following sections: Beef, Pork, Chicken and Duck, Seafood and even a whole section of the menu (although only containing 4 dishes) devoted to Frog! The Miscellaneous section of the menu includes various eggplant and beancurd dishes, as well as spring rolls and, of course there is the ubiquitous section devoted to rice and noodle dishes.

The restaurant has a few plastic tables outside and three large round tables inside, each set for about a dozen guests. I was the only diner in the restaurant during my visit in January 2006.

The staff/owners were very friendly and talkative.

The menu was translated into English, there was no automatically added service charge (which commonly occurs in Hong Kong restaurants) and I received a complimentary bowl of peanuts and a pot of Chinese tea while waiting for my meal.

Favorite Dish: I opted for:

Corn Soup - Cost: 35 HKD

A giant bowl of piping hot soup containing sweetcorn and egg. Very tasty after adding a bit of pepper.

Fried shrimps with cashew nuts - Cost: 50 HKD

A large plate with about a dozen shrimps in a stir fry consisting of cashew nuts, celery, green peppers, mushrooms and sliced ginger. Very tasty and very good value.

A friendly little restaurant with good value food! Highly recommended!
