Gorgeous Skyline

Favorite thing: I recommend taking the Star Ferry around the beginning of your stay in HK to examine the impressive Skyscrapers and the total skyline. It is a quick, inexpensive ride that provides plenty of picture opportunities. It gives one a general evaluation of the scope of the size and magnitude of the island.

Star Ferry 1965

Favorite thing: --

I stayed at the International Hotel on Cameron Road in Kowloon, but of course I won't do a hotel tip on it since this was 45 years ago and I don't remember anything about it.

In a letter from Phước Vĩnh, Vietnam, dated March 23, 1965, I wrote:

Hong Kong, though, is quite the place. I did nothing but walk around and breathe for five days. Out of the hotel, around downtown Kowloon, over to Hong Kong island on the Star Ferry, through downtown Hong Kong, up the side of the peak on winding, switchback walks through the woods and past the fantastic houses and gardens of the rich, Chinese and European alike, perched all over the hilltops and hillsides overlooking the city and the harbour -- yes, HARBOUR.

In 2010 I looked up the Star Ferry and found that they are still going strong, running four ferry routes and a harbour tour with a fleet of twelve ferries. The company was founded in 1898 and has been operating ever since then, except for an interruption during the Second World War when Hong Kong was occupied by the Japanese.

Star Ferry connecting Hong Kong and Kwoloon

Favorite thing: If you cannot stand the heat and high air moisture within the city any more then go on a ferry ride from one side of the Bay to the other an back. It costs very little and each trip is about 10 to 15 refreshing minute. The ferry boats look like shown on the picture. They start on the Kwoloon side close to the bell tower and run every 15 minutes.

Old transport in a fast moving world

Favorite thing: Get of at Tsim Tsa Shui by MTR (Metro) and cross over the Victoria Harbour by the traditional Chinese ferry.
The contrast you will feel on the water watching the skyscrapers and metal shining from the island gives you the perfect image of what Hong Kong is all about.
A big fast growing city with ancient roots.

Fondest memory: The night views from and to the skyscrapers. His 24/24h activity and shopping choice.
The variety and differences of 2 big cultures melting in each other (West and East).

Star Ferry Pier at Tsim Sha Tsui

Favorite thing: it's probably the cheapest way to go from kowloon to hong kong island ( or vice versa ) and also the cheapest way to appreciate the view of the victoria harbour, it costs only HK$2.2 ( around 22 Euro Cents) one way. from Tsim Sha Tsui, the Star Ferry could take you to Wan Chai or Central. from Central, it could take you to Tsim Sha Tsui or Hung Hom (HK$5.3)

fare subject to changes, please check :)

Favorite thing: For pennys you can sail on the Star Ferry, the views are great and one of the most wonderful experiences to be had in Hong Kong.

Fondest memory: My mother losing half her teeth in Hong Kong Harbour. {The other half she lost in Australia}

I sat in a restrauant with tears running down my cheeks when I learned that her teeth went overboard the night before. People must have wondered what I found so funny.

Sailing at night seeing HONG KONG lit up with whisky flowing freely.

Harbour view

Favorite thing: Apart New York's Manhattan harbour view, this is surely another panoramic view that makes you recognize the city at once!

Fondest memory: This is the sea view, as you depart from the pier on the Hong Kong island, towards the oposite side in the Kowloon area. Ferry is very spacy and comfortable and whats more important for many people, air conditioned! :-) You can of course sit on the covered deck in the normal air atmosphere if you are sensitive on a drastic micro-climate changings! :-)

Travel between HK n Kowloon...

Favorite thing: Travel between HK n Kowloon via a ferry! [For those who dunno, HK consisted of 2 major islands - HK island n Kowloon! :) ]

The ferry seemed like a popular form of daily transportation for the Hongkongers. u hafta pay a nominal fee for the ferry trip.

The journey though only about less than 15 mins, was rather relaxing! Most just sat back and enjoyed the waves...but we gals were too busy snapping away! :)

Favorite thing: The Star Ferry goes between Tsim Sha Tsui where a lot of the hotels are and Central. It is very cheap and a short ride, but the views are great. There are many bus routes that have terminals in the Star Ferry Terminal, as well as the MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Station. On the Central side, you end up near all the action - the banking district and everything.
