Ladies Market: Get Your Dim Sum T-shirts in Kowloon!

by Confucius Updated Dec 8, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Here it is! The famous Hong Kong dim sum T-shirt!

Ladies Market is the place that has the T-shirts you've been trying to find everywhere else in Hong Kong (except the expensive airport gift shop) but you still need to ask around.
Take, for example, the famous dim sum T-shirt. I had to walk a couple blocks up Tung Choi Street asking sidewalk T-shirt vendors "You got dim sum?"
They look at me like I'm crazy, usually speechless, so I have to clarify what I'm talking about. "I want that T-shirt with all the dim sum on it and Chinese characters; ha gao, cha siu bao, nuo mai gai...you know what I'm sayin' ?" (They seldom do.)
When you do find somebody who knows what T-shirt you have in mind they will likely tell you that it's sold out or they don't make that one any more.
LIES! They are only trying to trick you into buying an alternative T-shirt . Keep walking. That's the beauty of Ladies Market. They are all selling the same stuff and the T-shirts come from a single factory in Shenzhen.
Just keep going north on Tung Choi until you almost reach Argyle Street and that's where you'll finally find the famous Hong Kong dim sum T-shirt.

What to buy: The Hong Kong dim sum T-shirt features small photos of the dim sum shown in round bamboo containers next to the name which is written in Chinese. It's an attractive souvenir that makes an excellent 5 star gift for yourself and friends back home.
This is one of those souvenir T-shirts that you also should actually wear while you're touring Hong Kong. After you buy some, put one on and take advantage of the afternoon discount after 14:30 to get the real thing at an even cheaper price.
Many Kowloon restaurants serving dim sum no longer use the traditional push-carts that allow customers to look at the various food items as they go around the tables. Therefore it is very useful to wear this shirt and simply point at yourself to tell the restaurant staff what you want instead of trying to order from the poorly written English translation menu.

What to pay: Don't pay more than Hong Kong $45 for the Hong Kong dim sum T-shirt at Ladies Market. I got a special 3 for 100 price because I spoke some Cantonese and attracted a crowd of curious onlookers. I forget the exact price at the airport's duty free gift shop but it was something ridiculous like HK $125 for the exact same shirt design.

Ladies Market: Cheap Clothings at Ladies' Market

The Tung Choi Street market mainly sells cheap clothings. It is sometimes called the Ladies' Market to distinguish it from the Men's Street (the Temple Street night market) because the stalls in the latter once sold only menswear. Though there are still a lot of items on sale for women on Tung Choi Street, vendors do not discriminate and anyone's money will do nowadays. Vendors start setting up their stalls as early as noon but it's best to get here between 1pm and 6pm when there is much more on offer.

    Ladies Market: Ladies Market

The "Ladies Market" can be found on Tung Choy Street in Mongkok and is where you can find many bootleg and counterfeit items of clothing from bags to jeans and from watches to shirts. Some of the items are fairly basic looking and not branded and so are cheap to buy. Even if you're not intending on buying anything, it's a good place to come in the evening and take a walk around, despite it being murderously busy. Oh, and haggle the prices down. The northern section of this street is home to a fish market - pets not food.

Also known as "Women's Street" because it used to sell goods only for women, Tung Choi Street is similar to Temple Street Night Market, except that it starts its trading day at noon. In addition to the street stalls, which sell anything from furiously beeping alarm clocks and glittering copy-watches to unisex clothes and CDs, there are also lots of small shops that sell all sorts of other stuff. The market is generally quite crowded, and a bit of pushing is just as expected as haggling over prices.Ladies Market is THE most well-known street market in Hong Kong selling items of various kinds and is known as Ladies' Market or Ladies' Street. Ladies Market has many products for sale and you can haggle with the shop keeper. The products are not only for women. Many men's and children's products are for sale as well. Soft toys, clothes, bags, jeans, watches,... just to name a few. Its northern section features a market selling goldfish and is called Goldfish Street or Goldfish Market.

After each section of Ladies Market there is a small width of road that must be crossed in order to reach the next section and luckily refreshments are available near those intersections. One very popular dessert shop located close to Ladies Market is Hui Lau San. They sell beverages like pearl tea, iced chocolate and lemon tea.

My favorite thing to do here is EAT STREETFOOD! since these are cheap and are clean, where can you find barbecued octopus legs, Pork Intestines, Cuttlefish, Pork Lungs, assorted dimsums and dumplings and lots of Fruit and Flavored Juices! Cost between 4 to 10 hkd for the streetfoods and drinks! The market gets its name because it is particularly well known for fashionable ladies’ clothing and is renowned for good bargains. It makes a popular shopping place for both locals and tourists.

What to pay: counterfeit ralph lauren polo shirts at 25 hkd, socks at 20 hkd, ladies leather bags at 70 hkd, Counterfeit Police Sunglasses at 15 HKD, Pirated DVD's at 20 HKD, etc Beware as some unscrupulous stall owners give you old chinese renminbi as change!
