Hong Kong Museum of History
  • Tip Rating:
  • Visited the Hong Kong Museum of History on a Wednesday which is free admission day. Went to the museum thinking we'd only spend 2 hours there. We ended up spending close to 5 hours because there was so much to see. This museum is absolutely amazing. A lot of the exhibits brought back memories for my mom who remembered what it was like living in Hong Kong and Kowloon over 30 years ago. A few things she remembered: when water was scarce back in the 60's and when there used to be a lot of junks in the waters - now there are hardly any.

There are 8 sections to the museum:
    1) The Natural Environment
    2) Prehistoric Hong Kong
    3) The Dynasties: From the Han to the Qing
    4) Folk Culture in Hong Kong
    5) The Opium Wars & the Cession of Hong Kong
    6) Birth & Early Growth of the City
    7) The Japanese Occupation
    8) Modern Metropolis & The Return to China

Don't fail to visit the spectacular OCEAN PARK too! This is a huge theme park cum zoo cum giant aquarium so prepare a whole day to explore and enjoy all the things this place has to offer, believe me, it is humongous!

For the first time, I saw escalators up hilly areas up the seemingly mountainous terrain there! It was amazing! Around three levels of escalators to take you to the top! 9When we were there years ago when the kids were little!)

Animals from all over the world are on exhibit as well as the awesome rides for all ages! Itis similar to SEAWORLD in my opinion but with a bigger dimension!

The three main attractions are Marine Land, Headland Rides and Adventureland. of course plenty of restaurants and opportunities for shopping for souvenirs and other products!

My very first visit to a Ripley's Museum was at Hongkong's branch of Believe it or Not!

The kids were still young but they still enjoyed what they saw and were truly entertained! Things bizarre and unusual they got it here!

It was actually at Victoria Peak in Hongkong! I shall have a separate page on Victoria PEak.
(Sadly though according to one site, it is now closed!)

  • Address: 1 Lugard Road The Peak ., HK
  • Directions: It is right at the Peak, Lugard Road, so you won't miss it!

    Nathan Road
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nathan Road is a main road that roads straight through the middle of Kowloon and Mongkok, from north to south. It was the first road to be built in Kowloon, in 1861, after the land was ceded to the British following the second Opium War. The road runs for about 4km (2.5 miles) from the Peninsula and Sheraton hotels on Salisbury Road past the infamous Chungking and Mirador Mansions, Kowloon Park (this first section is known as the Golden Mile) before heading on up into Mongkok. It's a real mixture of glitzy posh hotels and crumbling apartments but is lit up with non-stop neon-lit signs and is best viewed at night when walking from the nearby Temple Street Market.

    Nan Lian Garden
  • Tip Rating:
  • This wonderful new garden, opened in November 2006, is located in the Diamond Hill area of New Kowloon opposite the Chin Lin Nunnery. The garden is designed in the style of the Tang Dynasty, a classical circulatory landscaped garden based on the blue print of the Jiangshouju Garden in Shanxi Province, China. It covers an area of 35,000m2 and includes trees, rocks, hillocks and water features such as ponds, waterfalls and fountains. Along the route are timber structures in the Tang architectural style such as pavilions, terraces, verandahs, halls, bridges and gates. There are small exhibitions including an architecture gallery and rock gallery. It really is a lovely, peaceful spot in the middle of the urban hustle and bustle. More photo's can be found in one of my travelogues.

    Open: 7am-9pm.

    Kowloon Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • This large 33 acre (13.47 hectare) park is a breath of (well I was going to say) fresh air in the middle of Kowloon. The park was formerly the site of Whitfield Camp barracks for the British with a battery along its western side until it was redeveloped in 1970. Today the park makes for a pleasant visit with a swimming pool, sports centre, children's playground, aviary, Chinese garden, bird lake and exhibition centre.

    Open: 6am - midnight

    Gold Fish Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tung Choi Street is famous for its goldfish market.
I never saw so many golfishs ! Orange, yellow, brown, red ... so many colors !

I learned that goldfish is very important in feng shui, because the Chinese word for fish, “yu”, is the same as the word for success. If placed in the office and/or home good fortune will follow !

    Yuen Po Street Bird Garden
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you want to see lots of birds, take a stroll over to the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden. It's pretty close to the Flower Market and the Goldfish Market. Lots of colourful birds to be seen; some of which include sparrows, mynahs, cockatoos, parrots, and Chinese songbirds. They also sell crickets and grasshoppers to feed the birds and a gazillion bird cages to house them.

You'll also see a lot of pet bird owners walking their birds in cages around this area. It's kind of funny.

    Goldfish Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lots of FISH here. Big fish, small fish, all kinds of fish. Fish in plastic bags and fish in tanks. My Great Uncle lives on this street and has the pleasure of walking through this street everytime he takes the steps down from his apartment. My dad loved hanging out on this street.
