Genki Sushi: Japanese Fast Food

by swissfondue

There are quite a few Genki Sushi Restaurants mainly in outlying areas but I've tried the one in Tsim Sha Tsui at the East Ocean Centre. Its not the place for a leisurely lunch but is OK for lunch on the go if you can find a seat quickly.I joined the lunch time crowd and browsed the sushi selection as it went by on the conveyor belt. Specials (called supreme) are HK$9 per piece, with sushi ranging from HK$10 to HK$32 depending on the ingredients, so your meal can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. The sushi I had tasted like sushi. I dont think you can expect any more considering the time spent on each piece along the frantic sushi making production line. I found out later that you can request a fresh order to be delivered to your seat rather than choosing sushi that has passed by everyone on its way to you.I did find the self serve green tea quirky. Apparently the leaves...

Conrad Executive Lounge: Breakfast

by cjg1

The Conrad Executive Lounge offers breakfast. lunch, dinner and snacks/drinks throughout the day. I have often had meals and drinks here during my stay at the Conrad. My most recent visit here with my wife we enjoyed our arrival breakfast at the Lounge. The breakfast items have a mix of continental and asian selections. After having breakfast in the Garden downstairs the next day; I would definitel chose that over the lounge going forward (the selection was just so much better).

Garden Cafe: Excellent Breakfast Buffet

by cjg1

As Diamond status with Hilton we were entitled to complimentary breakfast either in the Executive Lounge or her at the Garden Cafe. After seeing the breakfast spread the day before as we were walking out of the hotel; my wife wanted to try this instead. We arrived around 8am and were seated at a table for four. Tea arrived soon thereafter and we began to explore the buffet offerings. I must say the buffet offerings were incredible and even puts a cruise ship to shame when it came to variety and amounts of food. The buffet had a typical american/continental area as well as a full Asian buffet side. The offerings ranged from pork sticky buns, noodles, yogurt, waffles, pancakes, doughnuts, pastry, cheese, meats, potatoes, cereals, fruit, eggs, juices and more. It was amazing just looking at everything. In particular I enjoyed the noodles and dumplings. The waffles were quite nice as was the...

Conrad Room Service: Be Lazy...Order Room Service

by cjg1

After a long day of sightseeing; my wife and I were exhausted. We attempted to get into the Executive lounge but it was full so we headed off to the lobby bar for drinks and then back to the room. we were both hungry and the idea of venturing out for food did not appeal to us. We took a look at the room service menu and decided we should be lazy and order something in. Ater perusing the menu I found exactly what I wanted: A Singapre Rice Noodle with seafood. My wife went with their Margherita pizza. We placed our order and relaxed in bed.About twenty minutes later our food arrived via a white gloved waiter. He set up a table with linens and placed our entrees and silverware upon it along with a small vose with orchids....very nice indeed. From bite one I was in love with my dish. It was incredibly good. My wife also loved her entree; she was very hungry as well. This was my first...

Chee Kei Wanton Noodles: Wanton Noodle Specialist: A Must Try

by Aidy_p

Looking at the Mandarin word, I thought the restaurant's name was 'di zi'. I now believe that the owners are using the old chinese version where you have to read the name from right to left. Also, the name "Chee Kei" should be read in Cantonese an not as a chinese translation. We were there at 11am and the shop was pretty empty. What I learnt was that Hong Kongers are generally not early risers, nor do they eat lunch at such early timing. When visiting the restaurant, you must try the congee and also their wanton noodles! The congee was silky smooth. It does not comes with rice beads, but it's broken rice. The wanton noodles was equally delicious!

Xu Liu Shan: Getting Our Just Dessert!

by Aidy_p

My Hong Kong friend and I met in the late evening and he suggested that we have dessert over at this particular place called Xu Liu Shan. Looking at the queue and afterwhich at my watch, I can only say that these people are eating at all times of the day. My watch showed that it was 11.30pm. What are these people doing at bed time??? At least it was my bedtime. All in all, the place was quite cramped. But it's a norm in this land scarce country. My friend told me I'd to try their warm mango pomelo dessert. I was so tempted to try those cold desserts as the picture of those desserts really looked very tasty. But then, I felt that I was coming down with a flu and thus chose the former.I did not particularly like the pomelo, but overall it was not too bad. I was still looking over my shoulder to savour the beauty of the many desserts that were on the other tables.

Broadwalk Cafe: Ocean Park: Takeaway please!

by Aidy_p

It was way past lunch time and we had wanted to catch the dolphin show. So the plan was to have our lunch somewhere near the ocean theatre. There's a long queue at this takeaway restaurant, though the good thing is that you'd know the food is fast moving since the sale is brisk. I'd say that for a takeaway restaurant, the food is not too bad. The roast pork (Char siu) was really good, albeit it being a tad too oily. All in, it was a satisfying meal.

Mak's Noodle: Standing with the Giants

by Aidy_p

Figuratively, I was among giants as I was in the midst of Hong Kong islands. I was also among giants when I found out that the restaurant I'd visited, Mak's Noodle, is a 3rd generation family business dating back to the 1960s. The restaurant even has its own wiki page! Truthfully, my family and I chanced upon this restaurant and had not regretted stopping by this food joint for wanton noodles. The food was also reasonably priced - average of about HK$30 for a bowl of wanton noodle. As it's chinese name suggests, this restaurant serves mainly wanton noodle. There are also other offerings such as beef noodles and shrimp noodles. After ordering both the wanton and beef noodles, both were equally good. What made the difference was the springy feel of the noodles. Not over or under cooked. The soup base was tasty too.It was so delicious that I even ordered a bowl of plain noodle soup....

Sham Tseng Chan Kee Roasted Goose Restaurant: Truly Hong Kong!

by Aidy_p

The hotel that we stayed in pointed us towards this restaurant when we said that we wanted to try an authentic Hong Kong fare. It's was all a blur when we arrived at the restaurant. With hungry children in tow, we entered the restaurant not knowing what to expect. This restaurant has all the signature of it being truly Hong Kong. From the very tight sitting arrangement, to the noise of people speaking above everything else.Firstly, we were at the receiving end of an elderly supervisor who kept asking us to sit down when we were trying our best to allocate ourselves to the seats. There were 9 of us, foreigners barely able to speak cantonese and trying to make sense of things. To further enraged the old man, we could hardly understand the menu as it was all in cantonese. So ordering became a farce. In between ordering fod, I asked if they serve chicken. As curt a reply can be, the old man...
