Chee Kei Wanton Noodles: Wanton Noodle Specialist: A Must Try

by Aidy_p

Looking at the Mandarin word, I thought the restaurant's name was 'di zi'. I now believe that the owners are using the old chinese version where you have to read the name from right to left. Also, the name "Chee Kei" should be read in Cantonese an not as a chinese translation. We were there at 11am and the shop was pretty empty. What I learnt was that Hong Kongers are generally not early risers, nor do they eat lunch at such early timing. When visiting the restaurant, you must try the congee and also their wanton noodles! The congee was silky smooth. It does not comes with rice beads, but it's broken rice. The wanton noodles was equally delicious!

Xu Liu Shan: Getting Our Just Dessert!

by Aidy_p

My Hong Kong friend and I met in the late evening and he suggested that we have dessert over at this particular place called Xu Liu Shan. Looking at the queue and afterwhich at my watch, I can only say that these people are eating at all times of the day. My watch showed that it was 11.30pm. What are these people doing at bed time??? At least it was my bedtime. All in all, the place was quite cramped. But it's a norm in this land scarce country. My friend told me I'd to try their warm mango pomelo dessert. I was so tempted to try those cold desserts as the picture of those desserts really looked very tasty. But then, I felt that I was coming down with a flu and thus chose the former.I did not particularly like the pomelo, but overall it was not too bad. I was still looking over my shoulder to savour the beauty of the many desserts that were on the other tables.

Broadwalk Cafe: Ocean Park: Takeaway please!

by Aidy_p

It was way past lunch time and we had wanted to catch the dolphin show. So the plan was to have our lunch somewhere near the ocean theatre. There's a long queue at this takeaway restaurant, though the good thing is that you'd know the food is fast moving since the sale is brisk. I'd say that for a takeaway restaurant, the food is not too bad. The roast pork (Char siu) was really good, albeit it being a tad too oily. All in, it was a satisfying meal.

Mak's Noodle: Standing with the Giants

by Aidy_p

Figuratively, I was among giants as I was in the midst of Hong Kong islands. I was also among giants when I found out that the restaurant I'd visited, Mak's Noodle, is a 3rd generation family business dating back to the 1960s. The restaurant even has its own wiki page! Truthfully, my family and I chanced upon this restaurant and had not regretted stopping by this food joint for wanton noodles. The food was also reasonably priced - average of about HK$30 for a bowl of wanton noodle. As it's chinese name suggests, this restaurant serves mainly wanton noodle. There are also other offerings such as beef noodles and shrimp noodles. After ordering both the wanton and beef noodles, both were equally good. What made the difference was the springy feel of the noodles. Not over or under cooked. The soup base was tasty too.It was so delicious that I even ordered a bowl of plain noodle soup....

Sham Tseng Chan Kee Roasted Goose Restaurant: Truly Hong Kong!

by Aidy_p

The hotel that we stayed in pointed us towards this restaurant when we said that we wanted to try an authentic Hong Kong fare. It's was all a blur when we arrived at the restaurant. With hungry children in tow, we entered the restaurant not knowing what to expect. This restaurant has all the signature of it being truly Hong Kong. From the very tight sitting arrangement, to the noise of people speaking above everything else.Firstly, we were at the receiving end of an elderly supervisor who kept asking us to sit down when we were trying our best to allocate ourselves to the seats. There were 9 of us, foreigners barely able to speak cantonese and trying to make sense of things. To further enraged the old man, we could hardly understand the menu as it was all in cantonese. So ordering became a farce. In between ordering fod, I asked if they serve chicken. As curt a reply can be, the old man...

Disneyland Hollywood Hotel Room: Eating In Without The High Pricing

by Aidy_p

Restaurants, food courts, is there more to Hong Kong than this? Thankfully, there was. We had wanted to have home-cooked meals like how the Hong Kongers would have it. No fancy dining ware, not even a waiter on hand. We bought ready to eat food from Tung Chung's supermarket - Taste. Meat-wise, we had barbecue pork, sliced duck and sweet & sour pork. We topped it up with two vegetables - brocolli and leafy vegetable. All these in the comforts of the hotel room. Not only was it delicious, it was also below HK$120.As a gauge, a bowl of ramen noodle within the hotel will set you back by HK$70. More expensive if it's room service.

Pier 88: Steamboat to Warm Our Tummies!

by Aidy_p

One thing for sure is that tourists such as us would not have known such good eating places if not for the locals. You see, my cousin from Hong Kong reserved a table at this restaurant and she arrived earlier to make sure that we did not wait too long.My family arrived at about 9pm and even at that time which meant late night dinner or supper in Singapore, the queue to enter the restaurant was still shockingly long. When we entered the resturant, the size of the place just amazes me! Row after row of tables and the service staff looked totally overwhelmed by the number of people they had to serve.By the time we finished our dinner (At 11.30pm???), many at the tables were stil eating. Hong Kong is truly an eating capital!!! My cousin and her husband had wanted to treat us to shabu shabu as she said that it would warm our bellies. They ordered different types of meat, raw wanton, fish...

Food Republic: At The Border of Hong Kong

by Aidy_p

If you want value-for-money meal and at the same time, be spoilt for choice, then Food Republic at Citygate should be your destination. Located just above the Tung Chung MTR station, Food Republic on Level 2 offers visitors a wide variety of food. This was the first place I headed to to have my first local meal. What better way to start the trip than to have a bowl of wanton noodles with soup. Somehow, people prefer dry and thus it'll generally cost more than if you have it with soup. But with winter beckoning, I chose the latter. So happy to have a warm meal on a cool day.

Hollywood and Dine: Eating Within Disneyland Hollywood Hotel

by Aidy_p

My family and I had our first and also last meal in this restaurant. Not many people frequent this restaurant as I believe, most of the time those guests that were staying at the hotel were having their lunches and dinners outside of the make believe world. As expected of a Disneyland restaurant, movie posters adorned the walls of the restaurant while the floor is paved with red, white and black flooring that seemed to mimic a roulette wheel. For our first meal, we had beef lasagne. I know, we should have eaten what the locals ate but we were so totally famished that if you've given us McDonalds, we still would have betrayed our soul and chomped on the burgers! The thing was that the lasagne was served in aluminium trays and we had to scoop out the lasagne into our plates. The taste was not too bad and I'd love the ministrone soup. As for the final dinner, it was a bowl of chicken...

Wildfire: Not as expected

by solopes

I was forced to have dinner in the airport, with lots of time to pick the best place, and used it meandering around the several restaurants, reading menus, trying to choose “the right” meal. That’s when I saw, at the entrance of one of them… a giant bottle of Portuguese “Porca de Murça” wine. “Portuguese” and “wine” were two words suggesting that it would be THE place.Wrong! It was an Indonesian restaurant, with no wine at all.Just in front, a Chinese restaurant… could do. But the views of the dead chicken and geese hanging at the entrance dismissed Fernanda. Some more few steps, and… a western restaurant, with Portuguese names in the menu, and… wine. That SHOULD be the place. That was the place.Well, the food (reasonable) had nothing to do with Portugal, and the wine…was only a reference in the menu – in a restaurant that couldn’t sell any kind of alcohol. The waiter suggested her...
