Hong Kong Seven's

by Nijntje1973

This year I finally got to go to HK Seven's, probably the biggest sporting event/party in Hong Kong! I have been wanting to do it for years but never get round to. I am so glad I did! HK Chinese are quite tame in terms of partying so this annual event really liven up the city. Many of us were in fancy dress and the event lasted all weekend, starting on Friday afternoon!Of course there will be after parties everywhere. If you like this type of night life don't miss it! Even if you couldn't get the tickets (it is VERY difficult) to see the matches, just being in HK during that time is super fun. :) I have put some photos up to give you an idea. :)

Hong Kong Disneyland

by swissfondue

I arrived at Disneyland at 2.30pm having spent the morning on Lantau Island. It really was a spur of the moment decision made when the train I had taken from Tung Chung arrived at Sunny Bay, just one stop away. Before I knew what I was doing I had transfered to another much cuter train with Mickey Mouse windows for the short trip to Disneyland station.Once inside the park I realised that unless you have really young children who would be endlessly entertained, then an afternoon and a couple of hours in the evening is all you need. I was already aware that the park is small but most of the available space is taken up with retail and food outlets. After a couple of hours my friend and I seemed to be retracing our steps over and over. The Main Street is a pretty authentic recreation of its american counterpart and the jungle cruise is pleasant but everything is on a much smaller scale. We...

Symphony of Lights

by swissfondue

Every night large crowds gather on the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui to watch the Symphony of Lights, a laser and light display presented by the Hong Kong Tourism Commission. It is the worlds largest permanent Light and Sound Show. The 15 minute display is projected over 45 skyscrapers around Central on Hong Kong Island together with buildings on the Kowloon side. All the major buildings participate including 2IFC, HSBC Building and the Bank of China Tower. Hong Kong's tallest building the International Commerce Centre joined the show on May 1 2012. The buildings literally come to life as coloured lights, lasers and searchlights perform sequences accompanied by narration and music. The narration is in English on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Putonghua on Tuesday Thursday and Saturday and Cantonese on Sunday, however the stars of the show are the lights themselves. It certainly wont...

Statue Square - Central

by swissfondue

Statue Square in Central is a well known public thoroughfare but I had to check the origins of the name as its not a square filled with statues. Historically, the square was home to a number of statues of British Royalty until the Japanese removed them as part of their occupation of Hong Kong during WW2. The statues were returned after the war but relocated to other areas of Hong Kong. Only one remains today. While in the square take time to notice the many influential buildings that surround it including the HSBC building and the Bank of China Tower (as shown in my photo)If you are walking through Statue Square on the weekend on your way to the Peak Tram Lower Terminus in Garden Road you will notice the many Filipino maids who use the square as a meeting and socialising venue on their day off. During Hong Kong's Annual Winterfest Statue Square comes alive each evening from late...

Winding your way to the Peak on the No 15 Bus

by swissfondue

This is an interesting but rather long way of getting to the Peak especially if you are caught in a traffic jam or delayed by road works. Each time I have taken the bus, the trip takes the best part of an hour. From the upper level there are good opportunities to see Happy Valley Racecourse and the Wan Chai cemeteries as the bus travels along Stubbs Road. From 10am daily CityBus No 15 originates from Star Ferry Terminal Pier 5, stopping at Pier 7 and then at Exchange Square Bus terminal in Central. From there it travels through Admiralty and along Queens Road East then turns into Stubbs Road in Wan Chai and starts the slow and winding route up to the Peak. Bus 15 terminates underneath the Peak Galleria Shopping Centre which is located next to the Peak Tower.*If travelling this route earlier than 10.00am the bus leaves from Exchange Square only.IMPORTANT: Make sure you get on Bus 15. Bus...

Hong Kong Things to Do

by korychiu

Central - Metropolitan,Downtown,Pricey,Nightclubs, the cream and cherry on the cake.Wan Chai and Causeway Bay - City and Urban Community, Large Malls, Bars & Lounges, decent hotels, very close to Central. I would go for this area if I were you but you'd have to be lucky to get the room you want at the hotel you like. Room Occupancy is very high!Tsim Sha Tsui - The rival of Central in vibrancy. It's a little less business like but this is where you can find the Peninsula, Ritz Carlton, and the InterContinental.Hope this would help with you decision in the place to stay at. Look up prices on some hong kong hotel booking websites :) For Causeway Bay and Wan Chai I would look into Excelsior, Park Lane, Cosomopolitan, uhm... yeah there should be tons but I can't remember them right now.Depending on your arrival date, restaurant availability really varies, where as attraction sites should...

Keeping connected - WIFI in Hong Kong

by swissfondue

Unlike the locals in this high tech city who are connected 24/7, tourists sometimes have to rely on free publicly accessed WIFI to keep in touch with family or organise onward travel.FREE WIFI is available throughout Hong Kong Airport. Both Pacific Coffee and Starbucks offer internet access to their customers. There is also WIFI availability in public buildings throughout Hong Kong and in MTR concourses. The listed websites will give further information should you require WIFI while in Hong Kong.http://www.gov.hk/en/themehttp://www.mtr.com.hk/eng/getting_around/icentre.htmlifi/program/

Prince Edward District - Kowloon

by swissfondue

One stop north of Mongkok on both the red Tsuen Line and the green Kwun Tong Line is an interesting section of Mongkok - Prince Edward. For tourists, the Flower Market and Bird Garden are the best known "sights" to see. To get to the area where the Flower market is located, take exit B1 at Prince Edward Station. The street were you come out is Prince Edward Road West. Turn left and walk down Prince Edward Road West. If you pass the Mongkok Police Station then you are walking in the right direction. At the end of Flower Market Road (where the majority of the flower stalls are located) you will see the entrance to Yuen Po Street Bird Garden. If you are interested in bird and the quaint sounds some species make then you will find this area entertaining. I personally enjoy watching the elderly bird owners feeding their prized possessions. The Fa Yuen street market can also be accessed from...

1881 Heritage - Salisbury Rd - TST

by swissfondue

1881 Heritage is the result of the compassionate redevelopment of an important colonial site on Victoria Harbour. The main building was the former headquarters of the Hong Kong Maritime Police hence its location and both this and the adjacent Victorian buildings have been beautifully restored. The problem for me is that the immediate area around 1881 now looks even more ugly and needs to be improved to further complement the colonial feel of the surroundings (ie the Peninsula Hotel and Clock Tower). There is a hotel and exhibition hall and the obligatory shopping mall which does redeem itself in the form of the exotic Shanghai Tang department store (1F) There was still some retail space available a few weeks ago but a number of high end brands have moved in including Cartier, Wedgewood and Royal Doulton. There are upmarket restaurants in the main building and 1881 seems to be a popular...

Wyndham Street - Wining and Dining

by swissfondue

If you like history combined with trendy then take a stroll along Wyndham Street in Central (Hong Kong Island). Wyndham Street is situated in the nightlife district of Lan Kwai Fong and was once best known as one of the earliest thoroughfares created under colonial rule. Recently it has undergone a transformation to become well known again in a funky way as the new home of some of Hong Kong's classier dining establishments.Plenty of choice for foodies here including three that I can recommendNo 43: The Pickled Pelican - English pub meals. No: 73 Goccia Restorante - ItalianNo:77 Arigato's - JapaneseAnd one I would definitely like to try which recently opened in the LKF building (33 Wyndam Street) is Boqueria which serves Spanish tapas. Also in the same bulding is the stunning 29th floor Azure Bar which is part of the LKF hotel by Rhombus. All rather posh but worth checking out.

Follow the taxis to Wyndham Street...
