Hong Kong Heritage Discover Centre

by IreneMcKay

This centre is located within Kowloon Park. Admission is free and the centre is open until 6pm. The Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre is located in an interesting historical building which was once Whitfield Army Barracks. It was built around 1910 and was still used for accommodating British troops until 1967. This centre has some interactive displays and videos about traditional Chinese buildings and traditional Chinese life. I liked the ceramics room with its glass floor, underneath which were hundreds of shattered pieces of ceramics. If you happen to be in Tsim Sha Tsui you should certainly visit Kowloon Park, and while you are there you could easily pass an hour or so in this centre. The centre also provides free info about Hong kong Historical Walking Trails.

Show and Tell on the bed!

by lindyz

It has become a tradition of mine that on my last day of a trip, I will unpack everything that I have bought, and display it all on the bed, and take photos before attempting to pack it all back in my suit case! This is actually a lot of fun, because by the end of the trip, youve completely forgotten what youve bought at the beginning, so its just like christmas, finding things that youd forgotten you had and getting very excited!!! Just like a bunch of little kids I guess, but nevertheless its a lot of fun.

Bird, Fish and Flower Markets

by lindyz

These 3 markets were all within walking distance from Mongkok or Prince Edward MTR station or from our hotel at Langham Place and definitely worth a look, if only to see some very unusual things (especially at the fish markets!)Bird Market is located just off Prince Edward Drive and directly behind the Flower Market which isa on Flower Market Road, one street behing Prince Edward Drive. The Flower market was simply beautiful, the colours and the fragrance and the huge variety of fresh flowers was in abundance. The Bird Market was a bit unusual, just seemed like a lot of old men showing off their birds and it stunk like crazy! The Fish market was very unusual indeed, with lots of very strange things for sale, some of which we were not quite sure if they were for pets or for food - for either other pets or humans!!!!!Overall though, if you are in the area, these 3 places are definitely...

Shopping!!!

by lindyz

Im not sure that anyone visits Hong Kong and doesnt shop at some stage of their trip! Shopping is just everywhere, and in many shapes and forms, from the various markets around town, to smaller shops to high end fashion chains to large department stores. Prices in Hong Kong were amazingly cheap but still in comparison to most Asian places Ive been to. I think it would be fair to say that we shopped each and every day, and thats rather amazing actually, because my hubby Frank does NOT like to shop!!!!!

Exchanging money

by lindyz

The 2 best ways for you to exchange money is to either go to one of the street exchanges or to top up your credit card and withdraw at an atm machine. You will get better rates at street exchanges than anywhere else and they are everywhere, so just walk around for a while and check out a few of them and then go to the one with the best rates. Alternatively, we also used a cash passport card and withdrew money from atm machines, which was very very easy to do, with instructions in english.

Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island

by lindyz

Included in our tour of Lantau Island was a brief visit to Po Lin Monastery which is a Buddhist Monastery situated on Ngong Ping Plateau. It is a pretty place to visit and a worth your time. I do not know if entrance is free or not, as it was included in our tour. The gardens are beautiful and the statues and interior is spectacular. It was also very interesting to watch people lighting the incense outside the monastery.

Ngong Ping Cable Car

by lindyz

The 6 kilometre long cable car ride from Tung Chung MTR station to the top of Lantau Island and Ngong Ping Village is spectacular in itself and something I would urge you all to do. We opted for the dearer crystal cabin cable car with a glass bottom so that was even more spectacular! The ride will take about 25 minutes one way with the most amazing scenery all the way along. This is definitely worth doing. I do not know how much the cable car ride by itself costs and we got a tour package including the cable car, tour guide, bus to fishing village and big buddha and monastery entrance, this was $300HK each adult.

Tip Photo
Tai O Fishing Village

by lindyz

Included in our tour was a bus trip and tour guide to this small fishing village of houses built on stilts. It was very fascinating to see how the locals live and also to see some of the wares they were selling in the village, some very unusual looking seafood delicacies indeed! Needless to say, we did not partake in any of them!

Tip Photo
Tian Tan Big Buddha

by lindyz

The Buddha in itself is quite awe inspiring, sitting atop a large hill with lots and lots of steps to climb, you almost feel like you are climbing up to heaven itself. I will admit though that I got very tired, hot and sweaty climbing those steps and then .... knowing that I had to climb all the way back down again .... I was almost hoping there was an escalator!Big Buddha is situated on Lantau Island and easy to get to via the MTR and Ngong Ping Cable car. It is the worlds largest sitting Buddha and definitely worth a look at. I am not sure what entrance to the Big Buddha alone is as it was included in our tour price.

Madame Tussauds Wax Museum

by lindyz

We did not actually go here, only due to time restrictions, but it was on my list of things to do, so there is always a next time! The Wax Museum is located at Victoria Peak. It is open from 9.45am till 10pm daily and cost of entry is $160HK per adult.
