You can't say you've done Hong Kong until you've taken a ride on Star Ferry.

The Star Ferry operates on four routes, but the most popular one is from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central.

    Use OCTOPUS and pay 2.20UK$

By plane normally, especially if you come from germany!
from the airport there drive many busses to nearly all hotels in HK. The people from the Hong Kong Tourist Association will help you find yours.
You will find them at the exit of the airport, you can't miss them.
By metro! I have never seen such a metro system before! You can use ut that easy. It's best to buy 'Common Stored Value Ticket' for 100 HK$. This should be enough for one week. The handle is comfortable!
But attention, the trains have air condition so you always hould wear a long shirt in them.

Once you get to the airport follow the bus signs. The buses go to or near most of the bigger more popular hotels and hostels. Quick transportation and much cheaper than the airport express. Tickets anywhere from $10-$45HK.

As you can see, the ferries are small and functional. Do not expect a luxury cruise! Many Hong kong residents prefer to take the MTR, as they find it faster and more comfortable. Nevertheless, every foreign visitor should take the ferry at least once for the experience and the views.

On a fine day, the Star Ferry is the cheapest and best way to travel between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. Tickets only cost HK$2.20 and from your bench seat, you will get some great views of Hong Kong.

The ferries operate from 6.30am to 11.30pm.

Of course, if the weather is cold or rainy, better take the MTR.

This is one convenient way to get from the Airport on Lantau Island into Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula. There are only 4 stops on this express line: Airport, Tsing Yi, Kowloon (Tsim Tsa Tsui) and Hong Kong (Island). The journey takes only 30 minutes from Airport to Hong Kong Island.

The MTR card costs HK$220 for one return journey and for the next 3 days, all rides on the MTR are free. To see more details, please see URL below.

My top 5 advices for a pleasant ride:

    1) Sometimes it is no evident to find the MTR entrance, so look for this red (bordeau) spot to find your way.

    2) Choose the right exit (A1, A2,B, C...) according the street where you want to go.

    3) Stay on the right side on the escalator or walk on the left. Keep your right in the access pedestrian tunnel to avoid crash or traffic jam during the peak hours.

    4) Don't smoke, drink or eat inside the metro area to avoid painful penalties. You could still speak and/or use your mobile phone ;-)

    5) My last advice but not the least. Please let people go out the metro carrier before to go/squeeze inside... Un peu de courtoisie...

  • If you are in HK for more than a day or two it's well worth getting an Octopus Card. It's valid on most forms of public transport - MTR, trains, buses, most ferries - even the Peak Tram. It saves a lot of hassle.
Best of all when you leave HK at the end of your stay you can return the card and get back any value left on it.
But don't get the Airport Express Octopus Card. This gives just one journey on the AEL and is not really good value.

It is fun to travel on the upper deck of those tall trams... you have the opportunity to see things you would not if you were in the lower deck...

But be quick! It uses to be crowded up there... we had luck this time.
