An absolute must in HK is to take the Star Ferry across the harbour, a five minute ride from Tsim Sha Tsui on Kowloon to the island provides some nice views and a chance to unwind. The price is only 2HKD (about 30 US cents).

For 1.70 HKD for the bottom and 2.20 HKD for the top deck, the Star Ferry takes you for about five mins. across Hong Kong Harbour.
The views are great and the breeze feels even better sometimes.
It's the cheapest and certainly one of the most fun tourist things to do.

Inside a Star Ferry

Star Ferry service is rather prompt and accepts Octopus Card. We, only, realised that after paying for the token tickets.

If you are taking the star ferry, it is probably for the view since MTR should be the faster mode of getting to the destination on main hong kong island or tsim sha tsui.

A little tip - don't catch the ferry to hong kong island late at night, i mean, its safe and all, but the service doesnt run 24/7 and i got stuck on the island and couldnt find the train station. not very fun being alone in a strange country with no one offering to help.

Bus from Mong Kok to Star Ferry

Another alternative:
Go to Nathan Road, there are a number of buses (bus no. 1, 1A, 6, 6A, 7, 8, 9)that the Star Ferry is the last stop.
I would suggest you take bus instead of MTR. As either way you have to walk (by bus, walk from your hotel to the bus stops at Nathan Road; by MRT you have to walk from TST station to the Star Ferry), the first one is easily as the TST station area is undergoing constrution and I find it very troublesome, in particular you have a group of 12.
Nathan Road is just two streets next to your hotel.

The first news report of the star ferry seafaring vessel was reported in 1888. Since that time the ferry has endured many a hardship with typhoons and wars. Today it is the main mode of transportation between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Each vessel can carry up to 200 passengers and runs every few minutes. The star ferry has a charm about it and is loved not only by the locals but by tourists alike. I would ride the ferry at least twice a day if not more - just for the sake of taking that ride. I absolutely love the Star Ferry. I'd love to live on HK island and have to take the ferry to work everyday to tsimshatsui or visa versa.

It is so much fun though only a 10 minute ride. I wish it were a longer ride. It is an attraction in itself. I used the octopus card on the ferry though I thing it's like about $2.20HK for a ride.

I did take the Star Ferry Harbour Cruise which I will explain more in detail on the attractions and tips page.

The first thing you have to do when arriving in HK is take the Star Ferry.

Skip the harbor cruise and take one of these ferries across the harbor (it's the little green and white ferry boat in the forground). You can enjoy the same view as the harbor cruise. No, it does not come with lunch or dinner as the harbor cruise, but it only cost you HKD $2.20 for the trip.

The best way across from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island is the Star ferry . The green and white ferries have been a landmark here since 1898 and are alos a good cheap way to look at the skyline from the water. You can buy tickets right at the terminal . They are $2.20 HK with several runs every hour.

How many of us know that the Star Ferry has been plying the short route between Hong Kong island and the Kowloon mainland since colonial times. It is the cheapest way and offers the best view of Hong Kong Island skyline, If your ever in Hong Kong then make the voyage on the Star Ferry.

Star Ferry

The Star Ferry has been making the journey between HK Island (Central) and Kowloon (Tsim Shau Tsui) since colonial times. It is one of the most spectacular ways to view the skyline.

There are three routes: one between Tsim Sha Tsui and Central, one between Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai, and one between Hung Hom and Wan Chai. There are two classes on the ferry - 1st and 2nd. Both a less than a $1 US. The trip takes about 10 minutes.

The ferry service was originally founded by a prominent Parsee, Dorabjee Nowrojee, under the name of the Kowloon Ferry Company. Some reports say it was about ten years later, upon acquiring the total assets from Nowrojee, that the Star Ferry Company as we know it today came into existence.
