Chep Lap Kok International...

by kfh1

Chep Lap Kok International airport is located in Lantau which is a large island connected to the city by the Tsing Ma bridge. There are flights from all over the world and usually you can choose from quite a large number of airlines as well. The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is probably the best way to get around Hong Kong. Buses in Hong Kong are now mostly air-conditioned. The transport system in Hong Kong now adopts an electronic billing system which means you can use a pre-paid card (called Octopus) for most of your journeys (apart from the trams).

The transportation network in Hong Kong is excellent, most of the citizens are also travelling by public transport, such as bus, taxi, mini-bus and the most effective is MTR, it is cheap and fast.Join local tours, Hong Kong has a lot of local tours from one day trip to five days trip and the price is very reasonable.

I guess the most frequent way of getting in and out of Hong Kong is to fly. Of course, there are people who choose to travel by cruise ships. The economical ways of moving around in Hong Kong are taking the buses, the MTR and the ferries. Signs are posted in English and after a while, you'll zipping around Hong Kong like the locals.

If you are coming from overseas, it is best to fly as it is a long swim across shark infested waters. This is a 'must do' for any first time visitor to Hong Kong. You have to hop on a tram (on the island) and take it down to North Point, or further down to Quarry Bay. It gives you a good idea of the 'buzz' of Hong Kong, as it goes right through the most densely populated areas of the territory, which are probably the most densely populated areas on the whole Earth!! And it only costs HK$2 = about US$0.30!!!Refer to: http://www.hkta.org/transportation/tramway.html

The train from the new airport...

by tizerprawn

The train from the new airport is very swish and clean. Buy a ticket before you board and then just relax. There is also a free shuttle bus service which takes you from the main station (can't remember name - the post holiday stress has wiped my memory clean) to various destinations. The driver will load your bags and drop you off outside your hotel if you were lucky enough to stay at one of the major ones like us. There are also commuters who use the service. Great idea, what a fab way to save money. Our driver on the journey to the airport was so funny. he was trying to teach b/f how to speak mandarin, apparently, 'Ho' means good, 'Ho Ho' means very good, great, and 'Ho Ho Ho'.....well you get the idea!Taxis are not cheap especially around rush hour. Best to take the metro. Also it's a good idea to know roughly where you are going to avoid being taken around the scenic route.

Very clean and organised metro system. Aircon was a godsend especially during the humid days. Cheap and cheerful - great way to get around while listening to the way the stations are pronouced on the automated speaker.

Fly into the airport and then take the cheap and easy train into the centre of the city. There are then buses and taxis within easy reach.Get a bus map or underground. They are both good as are the taxis.

MTR is always the most fastest and efficient transport in Hong Kong. It's pretty cheap compared to the subwayof other countries. It takes you to almost all the major areas. Ferry is pretty good transport when you'recrossing the harbour. You get to see the nice VictoriaHarbour, and the fare is very low.

By Airplane to Chek Lap Kok Hong Kong airport on Lantau Island (check out the amazing bridge linking Lantau Isl to HK Isl), from there it's very simple to take a taxi into town, approx HK$300. A much cheaper way is by train (MTR), fast and much cheaper, HK$80.Hong Kong is a very compact city and has a really fast, efficient, safe and cheap public transport system. To start with theres the excellent Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system, a network of railways - Kowloon Canton Railway (KCR) and Light Rail (LR). Theres also many bus routes, trams and ferries. Taxis are everywhere, they are fast, easy to get and very cheap. Like every big city though avoid rush hours between 8am-10am and between 5pm-7pm.

I flew into Hong Kong (like most people do), but I also visited Macau and returned via ferry, which was nice and easy (of course I just went for a day trip, so I wasn't hassling with any luggage either). All the public transportation in Hong Kong is easy to use. The MTR (subway train) and ferries are what I tended to use most during my short stay. The buses in from the airport are probably the cheapest way to get between the city and the airport.
