What can you say...

Went with a group, so have no idea about the ticket process etc..Must say do a good job of keeping away the touts and beggars from here, you will however find them all at the Fort.

Fatehpur Sikri

Of course every visitor must go to the Taj Mahal, but it is also worth visiting the Agra Fort, further down the Yamuna river from Taj.
Also about 1 hour drive out of Agra is Fatiphur Sikri.

The Agra Fort is a beautiful fortress built with views looking down the river towards the Taj Mahal. Unfortunately this was the last resting place for the Shajahan who, after building the Taj Mahal for his deceased wife, was imprisoned in the Fortress by his son who wanted to take control of the empire.

Fatehpur Sikri is a deserted walled citadel built out of beautiful red sandstone on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the surrounding towns. It was built by Akbar and was briefly made his capital until It became deserted when the nearby water supply dried up.

Outdoor laundry in Mumbai

Ok, Mumbai is a long way from Agra, but since most foreign tourists stop in Mumbai first...

The outdoor laundry will make you appreciate washers and dryers like nothing else. Laundry is picked up from businesses and homes, brought to the laundry, washed and ironed and returned...all within a few days, for pennies, I was told.

It was amazing to see them ironing with a "real" iron - filled with coal to make it hot.

Watch out for the pickpockets as you look out at the laundry. I was swarmed by kids/men, with hands everywhere . They' weren't even subtle about it. Luckily I had left all valuables locked safely in the trunk.

The Taj Mahal, what else?! You must come in the early morning. Not too many visitors then and the sunset is beautiful.
Come on friday (or was it thursday?) then the entrance is free. On other days it will cost you 25 dollars to get in.

When you're in Agra, go see the Red Fort. There is so much to see in it. Several other buildings are inside so you at least need two or three hours to see all this!

The entrance of the Red Fort. It doesn't cost you anything to visit the fort. So this also is the place to be when you travel on low budget ;)
