The best way to travel in and around Bombay is to take a cab. The cabs are nice, comfortable and can carry a lot of luggage.
If you are a foreigner and wish to travel in Bombay in public transport, then the cabs are the best choice for you. You can pay according to the meter.
However, if you are an Indian then you can try the auto-rickshaws also. But in my opinion, travelling by cab is the most convenient.
Cabs are available everywhere in the streets, like in Delhi and Calcutta, so you don't need to call or book any taxi service as such.
