??Don't Remember??: Great Guy that ran the place I stayed at, Diu

herzog63 Says:  The place I stayed in was owned by a guy from Mozambique. He was great!! He let me borrow his fishing equipment and I gave his wife the fish I caught! She cooked some up for me too!The guy in the photo isn't the guy that ran the place but I thought I'd include him so you...

Hotel Alishan: Diu Lodging

Hotel Alishan: Diu Lodging, Diu

Canadienne Says:  I had a clean and comfortable room here with a small balcony facing the beach (past a road and some shops). I've always questioned mirrored ceilings. . .but the value was very good anyway. :-) Price was about $15.

Warnings Or Dangers

Exploring Diu Fort

Exploring Diu Fort, Diu

Canadienne Says:  If you do wander "off the beaten path" at Diu Fort, be aware that the rock/coast around the fort is rough territory. You can't make it all the way around the outer wall of the fort on foot ~ I know from experience. I love exploring the hidden corners of places like this. ....

Off The Beaten Path

Rent a bike!!

Rent a bike!!, Diu

herzog63 Says:  Rent a bike and explore the island. It is pretty flat so biking is very easy! Don't forget the sunscreen and some drinking water.

Diu Fort 3

Diu Fort 3, Diu

Canadienne Says:  Alone at last. . .. . .Unlike so many other palaces/temples in India, you won't be bothered by anyone here. No postcards, no touts, no worries. :-)

Diu Fort

Diu Fort, Diu

Canadienne Says:  Built in 1535, when the Portuguese took over Diu, the fort really is the main "sight" on the island. You can not only wander inside the fort, but around the exterior (you can't make it all the way around due to the water) and the double moat.

Diu's Churches

Diu's Churches, Diu

Canadienne Says:  Only one ~ St. John's ~ of the few whitewashed churches on Diu Island still holds regular services. St. Thomas's is a museum (religious carvings and statuary) and St. Francis's is part of a hospital. Those three are in very good condition, but there are also a couple of...

Panikot Fortress

Panikot Fortress, Diu

Canadienne Says:  The small white fort in the picture is the Panikot Fortress, also known as the Fortino do Mar (sea fort). Built in 1535, the small fort defended and dominated important shipping routes for hundreds of years, despite its small stature. It houses a lighthouse and a chapel.It...

Diu Fort Part 2

Diu Fort Part 2, Diu

Canadienne Says:  The fort covers approximately 600,000 square feet of the island of Diu. Plants and vines are taking over in some sections, adding to the "exploratory" feel of a visit. It's a fascinating place to wander or relax ~ a partly overgrown jumble of solid walls, cannons and even an...

Sunset at Diu Fort

Sunset at Diu Fort, Diu

Canadienne Says:  There isn't any information (signs, maps, etc.) to tell you what the sections of Diu Fort once served as. . .but it is still a fascinating place to spend an afternoon or early evening. The views over the Arabian Sea are terrific and it makes a wonderful place to watch the...

You find Diu to have some different architecture as it was settled by the Portugese. There is a nice fort right near the main town. There are quite a few white sand beaches. Ask the locals about...
