The two most confronting cities in India

by lynnehamman

The two most interesting - but confronting, cities in India ( in my opinion only please note) are Varanasi and Kolkata. Maybe its because they are challenging and confronting that makes them so interesting to me.So I would not recommend a visit to these cities unless you are well prepared for what you might find. Read as much as possible about the pros and cons. We found Varanasi daunting, but just for a day or so. After that-we were mesmerised by the spirituality and beauty of the city.Kolkata...........is a vast throbbing metroplis. The beggers, the traffic, pollution, heat. Its hard to endure unless you stay calm and try and understand the reasons for these immense frustrations. We have had two visits to this city. The first visit was just too much too soon. The second visit, we spent 10 days here. And really grew to love the city and the many wonderful things it has to offer...

Trip To India

by priyasingh34

In Delhi, Ambassador cars still line up outside the Lutyens Government buildings. These cars are based on the 1948 Morris Oxford design and are still made in India today. Although the President now has a BMW, the lower ranks will be motoring around in their sixty year old cars for some time. One of reasons Ambassador have kept on going is because they are strong enough to cope with India’s roads. Road widening is now commonly seen as the poor roads are seen as a brake on economic growth. Much of the digging work is done by (locally made) JCB’s, but a lot is still done by labourers, usually women who excavate earth in baskets and carry it away on their heads. What would these people do if they were all replaced by machines? In many ways everyone has a vested interest in resisting change, as doing these people out of their jobs who just mean more beggars living on the streets of the...

Voltage in India!

by travellingtechie

India is a 3 pin 220 Volt country! And like the British we have right hand drive with the driver sitting on the right hand side of the car! If you want to only upload the pics then I think it is better to do so in a cyber cafe rather than taking your lap top along. And if you find a cyber cafe called Siffy then go there. They may charge a bit more than the rest of the field but the speed is good there.Happy travelling!Travellingtechie!

Accept the inevitable

by lynnehamman

India is a country of a billion people. It has for centuries endured many upheavals of historic proportion. Things don't always run smoothly- in fact, they seldom do. There are power-cuts and computers go down, water shortages or no hot water- Bureaucracy is heavy handed. Buying a train ticket is a slow business.Waiting in long queues, one purchases the ticket at on window, gets sent to another queue to get it stamped- then gets sent to yet another window for a signature. And YET again- to another for a counter-signature. Much patience is needed.Traffic is totally chaotic- it overwhelms you, just close your eyes if you are in a cab. It is organized chaos, and you will always eventually get to you destination.Little hands reach out for a hand-out. Its very hard to feel indifference to the plight of the beggers and their children. Each traveller has to find their own way to deal with this...

Central and Western India during Dec-Jan period

by bkarjee

If you plan to visit Goa in Dec Jan period, make sure you make your booking at least 6 months in advance. This is a super peak season in Goa and likelihood of finding a place to stay in Goa is very less, if you try to book it at eleventh hour. Delhi and surrounding areas in Dec-Jan period will be very cold. So carry ample winter clothings. In general, this period is considered to be Peak period for travel purpose.Another website called Indiamike.com is very popular among travellers intending to travel in India. You may wish to try that. You may plan your trip in this sequenceDelhiAgra for Taj Mahal(can take a detour to Khajuraho from Agra)JaipurUdaipurMumbai (can take a detour to Aurangabad to see Ajanta and Ellora caves/Sculptures)GoaIf time permits, go to Hampi from GoaHope this helpsBKGoa

small change

by MichaelFalk1969

One of the peculiarities of doing business with Indians is that small change is always scarce. Shopowners or rikshadrivers will always claim that they don´t have enough change; they will be quite reluctant to change banknotes bigger than 50 rs. Also, small change is very useful as you can always give the exact price. If, let`s say, a rikshadriver or a guide demands a higher price than you agreed on, with small change you can give only the amount you are willing to pay - and nothing more. 10 Rs. or 20 Rs. notes are most useful, 50 Rs. are also convenient. Keep in mind that damaged notes are often not accepted by shopowners so if you get a slightly damaged banknote as change, demand another one.

Indian ATM´s

by MichaelFalk1969

Unlike most ATM`s in Europe, the Indian ATM`s don´t keep your credit card until you have typed in your PIN number. Mostly, you just put your card in the card reader and instantly out again, and only then you type in your PIN number. If you don`t pull the card out again, the ATM will not proceed with the withdrawal transaction. That said, most ATM`s here accept VISA or Maestro cards. The daily withdrawal sum at South Indian ATM`s is often limited to a maximum of 20.000 Rs., sometimes even less.
