Travelling domestically without a passport

by cochinjew

I would keep a copy of the page with your details and also the visa page.. when you check into hotels, they always ask you for your passport to make copies.. why not already make copies and then give one of your page with details and then the visa page..they didnt seem to be that strict with it.. but picky.to board flights you have to have some form of legit identification and i dont think the copies would do there..

Roadside saloons

by Rupanworld

Many of my VT friends have recommended this, so why not try. In India one will come across roadside saloons where you can try a haircut or a clean shave (both of which will cost you roughly 25 euro cents or a little more each- quite a bargain.) Why not give it a try!!!

Get Indian Visa Before You leave

by cochinjew

My Indian Visa says, date of issue and date of expiry. As you know there are tourist visas of different durations. six months, one year, five years, and ten years. The ten year visa and I think the five year visa, one has to apply in the country of residence.so if you get a one year visa, you should be alright, as long as you dont stay longer than the expiry of the visa one year from the date of issue. I have noticed that recently the Immigration officers pay scant attention to the visa, since you have to write the visa number and place of issue in the immigration form, but i saw one officer looking carefully at the date of expiry of the visa and asking questions. They must know that this visa is not easily given out, five working days, regardless of the country, unless you pay the visa courier services who facilitate a quicker issue. Best to get Indian visa before you leave your own...

DONT miss the local food in India ,it is delicious and exotic.only be careful to choose hygenic places(yet dont miss the street food!!!it is safe in some places)I have had great chaat(north indian snacks, mostly vegetarian)in old delhi and consider it to be the best i have ever had.i had it at a road side joint, where you can see the way it is being prepared.delhi has a great variety of food options and it being the capital of india, you get food from all parts of india.at south extention(which is popular for highend shopping)I ate at the Agarwal's which has vegetarian food.It was good.Try eating Thali meals(plate meals) which have are a complete meals served on a plate with small bowls of side dishes.the variety is great(is complete with starters, main course, sweet etc) and very often the portions are unlimited. In thalis you have options of SOuth indian, north indian,marwadi,gujarathi...

Well-labeled foods/entrees

by 850prc

India is a country where MANY people have religious and philosophical reasons to limit certain foods and food sources in their diet. Most people already know that cows are considered sacred in Hindu India, so that's why you don't find beef hamburgers for sale a McDonald's. In addition to beef being generally off-limits, pork is rare and not often consumed by people in India, both Hindu and Moslem. And of course, many many many people in India are vegetarian or vegan in diet practice. If you've ever been on a more special diet, or maybe you've had a close friend who was a vegetarian, you KNOW how difficult it can sometimes be when you dine at a restaurant. It would seem that choosing a veggie dish would seem easy, but... there are always other consideration. What type of seasoning was used, does the dish contain milk or other animal products, which would put it off the vegan list(s). Well...

Million dollar smiles for a few rupees

by 850prc

When you are touring India, and especially when you're at one of the major tourist spots, you'll often come across locals that you'd love to include in a photo. It's bad manners to just point and shoot, but if you ask first, they'll willingly pose just because they want to. However, in some other cases, they might really "appreciate" a few rupees as thanks. So, when you ask someone to be in your picture, don't be surprised if they smile broadly, pose and then say "money, please" after you snap. They'll not give you a hassle if you say no or walk away, or least I don't think so. Then again, I didn't stiff anyone. When they said "money, please", I would usually fork over 5-10 Rs. I figure a great shot with a cute kid or an expressive face is well worth giving them the equivalent of about 10-20 cents US.

Tractor + Truck = Tractor Trailee

by 850prc

Once we got out in the more rural areas, we began seeing lots and lots of what we called "Jed Clampett" cars. (Jed Clampett is the patriarch of American TV's long-running "The Beverly Hillbillies" show) These cars looked to be truck-like, but the engine was fully visible, in the way that you'd expect for a tractor or other farm machinery. I decided to send the photo below to my VT friend Uma Shankar to find out exactly what these things are.Uma says they're "tractor trailees" and they are indeed designed to be a bit of both trucks and tractors. They're fairly inexpensive and therefore are a big favorite in rural areas of India. And although they do seem to be working vehicles, Uma tells me it's not unusual for them to be transportation of choice in going to a highly festive country wedding. One little danger tip, Uma also says that since these vehicles are driven by rural types, who are...

He could sell refrigerators to Eskimos

by 850prc

Salesmen. India is a nation of salesmen (and women too, but mostly men). And like the old saying about a salesman so good and relentless that he could literally sell refrigerators to Eskimos, you'll come across the same tenacity in India. At first glance, this may be a bit of a repeat of my "independent businessmen" warning tip concerning the touts. But no, this time I am talking about salesmen. Be it in a small food stall, a simple gift shop, or a massive carpet or jewelry emporium, Indian salesmen are there to SELL. "I'm just looking" doesn't buy you any peace, either. If you say that you are "just looking", they'll start bringing special things for you to "look at". If you show an interest in anything, you'll see the entire stock and selection within minutes. When we visited a couple of carpet shops, it was less than 10 minutes before there were at least 50 carpets unrolled at our...

It really is a cow's country. :)

by 850prc

I'd always known that cows were sacred in India, part of the Hindu faith. But, it didn't really hit home until we visited and saw for ourselves. Cows literally roam free as their hearts' content... you can find them anywhere, except on most menus. There ARE no "Big Macs" at McDonald's in India. We saw cows wandering in the midst of the largest cities and busiest highways. I don't know how they managed to avoid being rammed by one of the lorries or cars. There were cows standing around when we were at the East Gate of the Taj Mahal. The entrance was a bit small for them to pass, so I didn't see any on the grounds of the Taj. We saw them wandering free through fields, taking a swim in rivers and ponds... and even noticed one unfortunate cow who learned - a bit too late - that the current of the Yamuna River in Agra was a little swift for a cattle crossing. It's strange to western...
